A Win Lands Eagles At Top Of NFC East

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. --Thanks, San Diego. A Cowboys loss puts them at 8-5, and so the stage is set for the Eagles: A win over the Giants lands this football team in first place in the NFC East. No kidding! Now, some last-minute news and notes with the Eagles and Giants about to start ...

  • Interesting that Trevor Laws is inactive. With Akeem Jordan up, the Eagles needed somebody to go down and they chose Laws. He has to be disappointed in his performance. Antonio Dixon has vaulted ahead of Laws, at least when the Eagles want to go to a "heavy" package defensively. Victor Abiamiri will take some reps inside when the Eagles need to give Brodrick Bunkley and Mike Patterson a rest.
  • Both defensive tackle Chris Snee and safety Michael Johnson are active for this game, although Johnson is not starting. Aaron Ross is the team's starting strong safety. Ross had been the Giants' best cornerback prior to suffering hamstring injuries all season. Interesting move there.
  • The weather has cleared out and is actually pretty warm and dry with minimal winds. The turf here has some rain on it, though. Lots of puddles. Still, if the Eagles want to throw the ball -- what am I saying? OF COURSE they want to throw it! -- the weather won't stop them.
  • Very interesting to see what the Eagles do against wide receiver Steve Smith. He is a dangerous slot receiver. I expect Joselio Hanson to play as the nickel cornerback, but to have the Eagles move Sheldon Brown inside against Smith. We'll see how it works out.
  • Who caught the first pass in Giants Stadium? Why, that would be Ray Rhodes, former Eagles head coach and a former Giants wide receiver.
  • Dallas is in trouble, folks. I know your heart is broken. Tough road games at New Orleans and then at Washington before the finale against the Eagles.
  • Speaking of the Redskins, I'm glad they beat Oakland. Washington hosts the Giants next week. The Redskins are going to be a very tough team to beat in the final few weeks.
  • Key here is to get quarterback Donovan McNabb going early. I think the Eagles will come out and throw the football. They need to get the Giants on their heels right away.
  • My over/under for Leonard Weaver touches is six. I'm not going crazy over his seven touches last week. I'm happy using more of LeSean McCoy and just about the same touches for Weaver. No way he gets 10-12 touches a game.
  • Judging by his pre-game kicking, David Akers has range from 50 yards tonight. Again, the wind an hour before kickoff is minimal.
  • Huge test for the Eagles defensive line here. Huge. Gotta stop the run. Gotta get after Eli Manning.
  • Star gazing: Tracy Morgan from Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock fame is here. He was a large presence in the media dining room. Bummer ... he's a Giants fan.
  • Sav Rocca should have no problems kicking tonight. It's shocking how the weather has calmed down. For once, I think the forecast was right on.
  • The Eagles are 19-16 against the Giants at Giants Stadium. Kind of suprising, isn't it?
