Birdseed
BIRDSEED:
• Mahe, along with former Chicago Bears TE Gabe Reid, are partnering to form "Hope in Polynesia," a group setout to improve the lives of Polynesian youth in Utah. "There was a 50% dropout rate last year in high school of Polynesian youth," said Mahe, "which was actually down from the year before when there was a 60% dropout rate." Mahe would like "Hope in Polynesia" to enable the Polynesian children living in the Utah area to get back to their roots and rediscover the foundation from which they came. "I want this organization to allow Polynesian-born kids here in the U.S., the chance to go back to their homelands and see firsthand where their ancestors came from. From there, hopefully they will be able to grow a stronger core internally, which can help them deal with anything life has to offer."
• Credits his big smile to his mother, Eva, who would always say, "Smile before I smack you!"
• Is proud of his Tongan heritage. Reno's parents relocated back to Tonga this past year. His father, Sateki, is an auto shop teacher and his mother is a physical education teacher at Liahona HS.
• Credits former Eagle, BYU alum, fellow Tongan and current sports director at Philadelphia's NBC affiliate, Vai Sikahema, with helping him adjust to the NFL. "He's taught me so much as how to attack the game on and off the field. He's told me to relax and not overdo myself."
• Mahe's real first name is Sateki. The football world calls him Reno, his middle name. His family calls him Junior. Reno really doesn't care what you call him as long as it's not Ma-HEE, which translates to underwear in his native Tongan language
• Upon arrival in Philadelphia as a rookie free agent, Mahe, a receiver in college, asked Andy Reid's son, Garrett, who also attended BYU, who the other receivers on the roster were. The younger Reid replied, "You are playing running back here." A stunned Mahe replied, "Oh really. That's great. I'll clean laundry here if I can stay."
• While participating in the team's offseason conditioning program from 2004-06, served as a host at "Chickie's and Pete's" restaurant in South Philadelphia
PERSONAL:
• He and his wife, Sunny, have three children, Evie (4), Ellie Louise (3) and Trey (5/7/07). Reno also has a son, Jeffrey (7), who resides in Nevada. The family moved from Houston to Utah during the offseason
• Sunny was an All-America volleyball player at BYU
• Headlined "Stop Drugs Now," a youth-oriented program designed to promote the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle, in 2007. Mahe used the experience to further stress the importance older kids have on the younger generation. "It was a way for us to reach out to the older kids, letting them know how important they are in influencing younger kids," said Mahe. "It doesn't matter what age you are, you can be a role model to anyone."
• Worked out during the 2007 offseason with friend and former Chicago Bears TE Gabe Reid. The two were trained by Dustin Johnson, a former football player at BYU who studied Kinesiology
• Has appeared on a Utah County sports radio show, and plans on getting into the radio business as soon as his playing days are over. "I'm going to have my own radio show…well, with a co-host."
• Plans on developing his own independent BYU sports web page
• Opened his home when he lived in Texas to a family of four who were displaced from Louisiana by Hurricane Katrina
• Prides himself on being a good person. "If you work hard enough and you do good for others, the best things in life will eventually come to you. My ultimate goal is to make my wife the happiest person in the world, be a great father, and an honest man."
• Attended Brighton HS in Salt Lake City, UT. A two-time all-state selection and Gatorade Utah player of the year as a senior
• Attended Utah Valley State and Dixie Junior College in between stints at BYU
• Enjoys putting together puzzles with his wife and is also a fan of the TV series, "Gilmore Girls," which he watches on DVD as he does not subscribe to cable TV.
• Heavily involved in family issues and the Mormon faith. Inspired by a quote from David O. McKay "No success can compensate for failure in the home."
• Is a huge fan of the LA Lakers and Magic Johnson
• Was part of a talented three-headed tandem at BYU which included QB Brandon Doman and RB Luke Staley
• Has aspirations of teaching and coaching high school football after he retires from the NFL. In fact, served as a substitute teacher in the Spring, TX, school district during the 2004 offseason
• Was the starting point guard for the Eagles offseason basketball team from 2005-06
• Once served as a color commentator for the Utah Indoor Football League
• Spends a lot of time watching movies including his favorite, "Napoleon Dynamite." Also loves the movie "Cinderella Man"
• Full name: Sateki Reno Mahe Jr.
