Birdseed
BIRDSEED:
-
Inspired by his parents, Robert and Diane, both cancer survivors. Robert survived leukemia and continues to work 60-plus hour weeks as a police office in Salt Lake City, while Diane, a retired school teacher, is a breast cancer survivor. "Seeing what they've gone through with all the treatments," said Young, "the mental part with a family to raise, it made me realize how easy I have it. I feel very lucky."
-
Partnered with E-Knowledge, an online college prep course, in the 2007 offseason, and spoke at several high schools in the Philadelphia area about the importance of doing well in school and preparing for college. "Anytime I have the chance to impress upon kids that the better they do in school, the better chance they have to go to college, I take the opportunity," said Young. "I think it's extremely valuable to have something like E-Knowledge available to them and I'm excited to be a part of it."
-
Trained with Hall of Fame lineman John Hannah for eight days in Newburyport, Massachussets in 2005. "It was a great experience working out and learning from one of the best players in NFL history. He took me into his home and talked to me about football on and off the field. I even tried on his HOF jacket."
IN THE TRENCHES:
-
His definition of an O-lineman: "People that know a lot about the sport know that's where the game is won or lost. It's a position that you don't get a lot of respect from fans because you can beat a defensive lineman 69 of 70 plays, but if the defensive lineman beats you once, they get all the credit. It's the most important position on the field."
-
Favorite O-lineman: John Hannah/Jon Runyan. "My favorite kind of lineman is someone who's nasty, gets dirty and fights tooth and nail every play. Runyan and Hannah are both like that. Runyan is kind of like the modern-day Hannah. Both are nasty and brutal on the field. They are defensive linemen playing offensive line. They attack people and they're always the aggressor."
-
Throwin' up some serious weight: An avid weightlifter since his junior year of high school, Young aspires to one day compete in the World's Strongest Man competition. He bench pressed 225 pounds 43 times at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2005, two shy of the combine record.
