Year-By-Year Highlights
2005 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Completed his rookie season tied for the team lead in rushing TDs (3) and ranked 2nd in atts. (55) and yds. (278) despite playing in just 7 games
• Made the first start of his NFL career at Arz. (12/24/05).
• With a career-long 59-yd. TD run on his first carry of the game at StL (12/18/05), recorded his 3rd rushing TD in two weeks and his 2nd 40-plus yd. TD run. His 59 yarder was the longest run by an Eagles rookie since Herman Hunter (74t) at Dal. (11/24/85) and the 4th-longest by a rookie in team history
• Became the 2nd Eagle ever, and the first Eagles rookie, to post 40-yd. TD runs in consecutive games in the same season (Steve Van Buren - 10/7 & 10/14/45). Was one of three NFL rookies to do so since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 (Corey Dillon & Antowain Smith both did it in 1997). Prior to 1970, four NFL greats did it over a span of 11 seasons as rookies: Alan Ameche (1955), Lenny Moore (1956), Paul Lowe (1960) and Gale Sayers (1965)
• Posted career rushing highs in yds. (114), carries (11) and TDs (2) vs. NYG (12/11/05), while becoming the first Eagles rookie to rush for 100-plus yds. since Correll Buckhalter in 2001 (134 - vs. Arz., 10/7). Also became the first Eagles rookie to post 2 rushing TDs in a single-game since Charlie Garner (at SF, 10/2/94). His yardage total was also the 5th-best by an Eagles rookie in a single game
• Saw significant action vs. GB (11/27/05) and carried the ball for the first time in his NFL career, rushing for 24 yds. on 6 atts. Also forced and recovered a crucial fumble on special teams in the 4th qtr. The turnover led to a David Akers FG to put the team up 19-14 with 1:52 left to play
• Appeared in his 1st NFL game vs. SD (10/23/05)
Birdseed
BIRDSEED:
• Began designing his own line of football cleats and is looking to work with a shoe company to develop his ideas. To date, he has designed two mid-height cleats and one low-height cleat. He put an extra emphasis on designing new ideas for better traction. He is also currently designing digital commercials to use in the presentation of his product line in order to display the vision he has developed. "I want to get into the shoe-making process," said Moats. "I want to be able to make these shoes like old shoemakers used to."
• Well-versed in graphic design and is proficient in the following computer programs: Autodesk Maya, Photoshop, Motion Builder, and Flash. Says his love for graphic design, "makes me look at everything differently…My wife says I'm always dissecting things. Everything I look at, I try to figure out how I would be able to convert it into images."
• During the 2006 offseason, Moats combined his creativity with raw talent in another field, graphic design, as he completed a one-week internship with the graphic design department of EA Sports in Orlando, FL. "I've always been good with computers," said Moats. "I started really getting into graphic design in college. I basically taught it to myself, took a couple of classes, and before I knew it, I was able to do so many different things with these programs. It's amazing."
• After his freshman year in high school, Moats was diagnosed with a staph infection in his right leg before the beginning of the football season. The prognosis was not good. After surgery, Moats was forced to stay home from school for his entire sophomore year. He says he got through the year with the help of his family, his teachers and his coach. After a full year off and months of strenuous rehab, Moats proved everyone wrong when he made his return to the football field as a junior and rushed for over 1,500 yds. and 20 TDs. He later finished his career at Bishop Lynch HS as the school's all-time leading rusher in yards and TDs.
PERSONAL:
• Resides in Cherry Hill, NJ, during the season, and in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, TX, in the offseason, with his wife, Tamishia. Tamishia was accepted to the Ph.D. program at the University of Texas-Dallas in the spring of 2007, after completing her masters degree in public administration at Cheyney University. Her Ph.D. will focus on public affairs and she one day would like to become a college professor
• Proposed to Tamishia the day before the Eagles preseason game at Pit. (8/15/05). Moats went on to score a team-high 2 TDs in that game. Said Moats of his wife: "She was Miss Black Louisiana and Miss Louisiana Tech. She's a go-getter. I can tell you that. She was a dancer. Her teacher was one of the best in the world. She can do everything from hip-hop to ballet."
• Is the son of Rolinda Moats and Richard Jones. Has two older brothers, Myron and Jason (a former CB at Harding University). His two cousins also are former college football stars, Edward (a CB at Texas Tech) and Brandon (a RB at Texas A&M Commerce). Moats learned to play football with his brothers and cousins in a field behind his grandmother's house in Cliff Oak, TX
• Ran for 2,646 yds. and 33 TDs as a senior at Bishop Lynch HS in Dallas. Finished as the school's all-time leading rusher (4,782 yds. and 56 TDs). First attended Roosevelt HS in Cliff Oak, TX, before transferring
• Trained in the 2007 offseason at Southern Methodist University with Courtney Ray, the school's assistant strength and conditioning coach
• Is an avid guitar player
• Took a Western Caribbean cruise with his wife in 2007
• Worked at "The Fudgery" throughout high school. Moats and four other friends would stand outside of the fudge store and sing for customers passing by. "We were really good. We tried to harmonize, kind of like Boys II Men."
• Was a judge at the 2006 Miss Philadelphia Pageant.
• Grew up idolizing Hall of Fame RB Barry Sanders. "I know it sounds cliché, but I just loved everything about him. The way he played the game, the kind of person he was, everything. He was just someone I looked up to."
• Full name: Ryan Rockmond Moats. His grandfather, Roland, created his middle name. Roland also gave each of Ryan's male cousins their middle names as well. Roland was the father of five girls and no boys, therefore his daughters gave him the privilege of helping name each of their male children
