Birdseed
BIRDSEED:
• Was selected to the Pro Football Writer's Association's Midseason All-Pro team.
• Growing up in Camden, Arkansas, Andrews endured a humbling childhood growing up in a down-trodden neighborhood. Perhaps that's why he has a soft spot in his heart for underprivileged kids. "I remember when I was a kid," recalled Andrews, "the kids were really tough on me. They used to have a 'tag check' day where the kids would check the labels in each other's clothes to see who wore the cheapest stuff. We didn't have a lot of money and I got teased a lot. Being a 5-foot-9, 230-pound 12-year-old didn't help that either. It was rough."
• Claims to remain "a big kid" who enjoys life to the fullest. There is nothing more evident of this than the shrine he built in his basement to "Sponge Bob Square Pants." Said Andrews: "I like how Sponge Bob handles life. He gets picked on all the time, but he's still happy. He doesn't get angry with people; he just goes through life with a smile on his face."
• Began taking voice lessons in Philadelphia during his rookie season in 2004 with his voice coach Rod Millwood. He then outfitted his house with a mini-recording studio where he can mix and record his own music. Andrews recently upgraded the equipment in his basement in 2007 and is extremely proud that he set everything up by himself. He is currently working with an up-and-coming rap artist from New York City. "Music is my first love. If you took everything else away, I could still go on if I had my music. My list of priorities goes - God, family and music."
• Surprised his mother with a Mercedes Benz E500 once he signed with the team. Remodeled his mother's home in Camden, AR. "She loves where she lives so I just fixed the place up."
• Left school early to help his mother, Linda, who was laid off when the International Paper Company in Camden was closed down. Said Shawn, "I just couldn't stand to see her struggle, wondering if this bill was going to get paid or if the lights were going to get cut off."
• Upon signing his rookie contract, he purchased his first home in Burlington, NJ. "The first thing I did when I moved in was jump up and down on my bed. I was so excited. I was never allowed to jump on the bed when I was little. That was mostly because when I was 12, I jumped off a piano bench onto my grandma's bed and the thing almost went through the floor."
• His older brother, Stacy, an offensive lineman from Mississippi, was a 4th round draft choice of Cincinnati in 2004. Their teams faced each other once in college in 2003 and once in the pros in 2004
• Admires All-Pro guards Will Shields and Larry Allen and has modeled his game after features that each player has possessed
• Was voted by fans as the starting right guard on the Eagles 75th Anniversary Team.
IN THE TRENCHES:
• His definition of an O-lineman: "I try to stay away from the cliches, but blood, sweat, and tears are the main ingredients of being an offensive lineman. You have to be a beast down in there. We are that protective shield that makes all the difference between winning and losing."
• On what it's like in the trenches: "It's a lot of grunting, a lot of snorting, a lot of calls amongst the offensive line. We're all like one when we're down in the trenches because we have to let each other know what's going on. If there's one weak link in the line then that could cost us a sack."
• Favorite O-lineman: Willie Roaf. "We actually had the same coach in high school, Marion Glover. Roaf is an amazing story, how a 225-pound high school kid can turn into an All-Pro offensive lineman."
• Sure-Handed Shawn: Was an accomplished tight end as a sophomore and junior in high school, catching several TD passes. "I was 315 pounds and was the quarterback's favorite receiver."
PERSONAL:
• Has really taken to real estate investing, currenlty owning properties in Houston, Philadelphia, Arkansas and Marlton, NJ
• Attended Camden Fairview HS, earning 1st-team All-America honors. Also threw the shot put and discus
• Donated $5,000 worth of Christmas toys to deserving children in the Philadelphia area in 2005. "The best Christmas gift I've ever gotten was the ability to give gifts to others. When I was growing up I didn't have great Christmases. It makes me happy now that I'm in a position to make a difference."
• Vacationed in the 2006 offseason in San Diego. After visiting Sea World in San Diego, fell in love with penguins and plans to purchase two as pets
• As a freshman in 2001, played in Arkansas' historic 58-56, 7-OT win vs. Mississippi, as the team boasted three individual 100-yard rushing efforts and 521 yards of total offense against the Rebels
• Was a member of the Fayetteville (AR) Community Outreach program, working with mental health patients and was featured during the NFL Draft in a public service announcement
• Brother, Derrick, has been stationed in Germany, Korea and Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Is scheduled to return to Afghanistan in September of 2007. He is currently stationed in Aberdeen, MD
• Has 5 tattoos, 2 of which signify how close he and his family are. The first is a cross on his left forearm with the names of his family members (Linda, Derrick, Stacy and Shawn) at each corner. The other is the phrase "God Bless Miss Linda" with angel's wings on each side, dedicated to his mom
• Has become a huge fan of sushi. "I could eat it every day for lunch and dinner, especially the Philly roll with the cream cheese and smoked salmon."
• Majored in communications
• Full name: Shawn Cornelius Andrews
