Birdseed
BIRDSEED:
- Has coached a tee-ball team (ages 5-6) the last two offseasons in East Greenwich, NJ. His friend's son is on the team
- As a senior at Byron (IL) HS, Considine was considered one of the school's top athletes on one of the state's best football teams. It seemed like everyone knew who he was except college football coaches, who, for the most part, were not offering him a scholarship but rather a chance to walk on. Iowa was one of those schools.
Said Considine, "If I was going to walk-on anywhere, why not at a Big Ten school like Iowa. They had a new coach, and were just looking for dedicated guys who would buy into what they were coaching. I could do that."
After redshirting as a freshman, he eventually earned that elusive scholarship. A hard-worker on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom, he finally earned a starting role at safety as a junior. The following year, he excelled on the field and NFL teams came knocking
- Grew up in Byron, IL, an extremely small town with a total population of 2,400. There were two things in Byron that drove the town, a nuclear power plant and the farming industry. "It was just like the town the Simpsons lived in, Springfield. It even had the two big towers from the nuclear plant like it did."
- His parents, Rick and Colleen Considine, are a great story of hard work and dedication to family. At the age of 19, the two were married and Colleen later gave birth to their first son, Sean. At the same time, Rick was attending Northern Illinois on a football scholarship. Not wanting to live apart from his wife and son, who were staying with Colleen's mother nearly 45 minutes from UNI, Rick made the trek back and forth every day while also tending to his studies. Now, two more children and 24 years later, Rick is the vice president of sales for Raynor Garage Doors, and Colleen is a homemaker.
- Grew up as an avid Packers fan and idolized QB Brett Favre. "I was a Packers fan because of my dad," said Sean. "Back then, in my house, you either rooted for the Packers or you didn't eat. It was tough sometimes because we grew up in Chicago Bears country. But, we were all about the Packers and didn't care who knew it."
- Picked up a new hobby in the 2007 offseason: purchasing cattle to raise, breed and sell. "I got into it through my father-in-law. It's a huge business that I'm really interested in. It's amazing how much work actually goes into it."
- Besides his family, one of Considine's greatest influences was his high school football coach, Everitt Stine. Said Considine, "He always preached that football is more about team than individuals. He never released our stats in high school, just the score. He used to drive the local newspapers crazy. That may have even hurt my chances at a scholarship, but it really taught us a great lesson." Now retired, Stine travels the country and lives in a RV. He has even attended a few of Considine's games as an Eagle
PERSONAL:
- He and his wife, Nicole, live in Deptford, NJ, with son, Caden James (9/3/07). Nicole attended Augustana College where she ran track
- Has a younger brother, Ryan, and a younger sister, Megan
- Enjoys fishing and hunting. His hunting partners are Eagles teammates Kevin Kolb and Trent Cole. Jokes Considine about the hunting skills of Kolb and Cole, "If you add them together, you might get one of me."
- Was recruited by Eastern Illinois and Northern Illinois as a centerfielder. Holds his high school's record of 8 home runs in a season
- Annually hosts a golf tournament in Byron, IL, that benefits the American Cancer Society
- Also conducts an annual football camp for children in the 2nd through 5th grade in Byron called the "State Champ Camp."
- Earned all-state honors as a junior and senior RB and LB at Byron (IL) HS. Holds school records for rushing yds. (4,010) and TDs (65). As a senior, led his team to the state title with 1,580 rushing yds. and a school-record 34 TDs
- Works with the "Aiming for a Cure" charity, sponsored by "Hunter's Specialties," that benefits the Children's Hospital of Iowa
- Is a "die-hard suffering Chicago Cubs fan," and has made at least one trip to Wrigley Field every year since he was a child. His favorite Cub of all-time is Shawon Dunston
- In his first job, worked as a farmhand on his best friend's ranch in Byron, IL
- Holds a degree in marketing and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors four times
- Full name: Sean Richard Considine
COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS:
After walking on at Iowa, Considine parlayed his hard work ethic and determination into not only a scholarship, but a fine career that culminated in All-Big Ten honors as a senior. In his four-year career, registered 157 tackles, 6 INTs (2 for scores) and 5 blocked kicks, 4 of which led to TDs. As a senior, earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors after making 48 tackles, 3 INTs, and a blocked kick. Took over the starting free safety position in 2003 and recorded 66 tackles, 3 INTs, and a pair of blocked kicks. Redshirted in 2000.
INJURY HISTORY:
Was placed on IR on 11/7/07 after suffering a shoulder sprain vs. Dal. (11/4/07). Suffered a strain of his hip flexor in the 2nd qtr. at SF (9/24/06) that sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Suffered a dislocated shoulder vs. Dal. (11/14/05) and was placed on IR on 11/16.
