Biography

A 35-year coaching veteran in the collegiate ranks, John Lovett joined the Eagles during the 2013 offseason as the team's defensive backs coach.

In 2013, the Eagles defense tied for third in the NFL with 12 games of holding their opponents to 21 points or less and ranked tied for third in the league with 31 takeaways, trailing only Seattle (39) and Kansas City (36). Under Lovett’s direction, CB Brandon Boykin led the team and tied for second in the NFL with six interceptions.

Lovett spent the 2012 season coaching the defensive backs at Texas Tech University. With his assistance, the Red Raiders finished the regular season ranked 39th in the nation in total defense after finishing 114th the previous season, a 75-place improvement. Texas Tech also led the Big 12 Conference in pass defense, allowing only 195.8 yards per game through the air.

Prior to joining the Red Raiders, Lovett spent two years as the defensive coordinator at the University of Miami. In 2009, he tutored a defense that ranked 29th in total defense and featured All-America and Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist defensive back Brandon Harris, first-team All-ACC defensive lineman Allen Bailey and second-team All-ACC linebackers Darryl Sharpton and Colin McCarthy.
