A first-team All-America selection in 2007, scored 29 total touchdowns in 36 career games as a wide receiver and return specialist. Set a Pac-10 Conference record with six punt returns for touchdowns in his career, two shy of the NCAA all-time record of eight, set by Wes Welker of Texas Tech (2000-03) and Antonio Perkins of Oklahoma (2001-04). A semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007, caught 65 passes for 762 yards (11.7 avg) and six touchdowns, and finished his career with 2,423 receiving yards and 22 touchdown catches, ranking him third on the school's all-time list in both categories. His 162 catches are the sixth-highest total in school history. As a punt returner, his career average of 16.7 yards per return set a Cal record and ranks second in Pac-10 history behind baseball Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson of UCLA (18.8). With 3,293 career all-purpose yards, ranks third in school history behind Deltha O'Neal (4,998 yards, 1996-99) and Russell White (3,367 yards, 1990-92).
BIRDSEED:
- Prior to the 2008 NFL Draft, was mentored by WR Jerry Rice. "He emphasized to me the importance of my life off the field as much as he did on the field. He told me to work to leave a great impression on everybody and to work as hard as I can."
- Credits his four older brothers for making him the athlete he is today. They would have their little brother up on Sunday mornings the day after his high school games working on his skills. "When other kids were still in bed on Sundays, my brothers had me up working. They made me tough. The wouldn't let me be a punk."
His brother Byron, who spent two seasons in the NFL as part of the Chiefs practice squad (1992-93), began taping DeSean's football games at a very young age in order to help him hone his skills. Eventually he began taping other things involving DeSean that they hope to use some day in a documentary.
All four brothers played collegiate football: Byron (San Jose St.), Derrick (Idaho St.), Travis (Utah St.) and Jay (Santa Monica Junior College). Byron now works in the editing office at FOXSportsnet in Los Angeles
- A huge fan of video games, graced the cover of EA Sports NCAA Football 2009
PERSONAL:
- Resides in Los Angeles, CA
- Son of Gayle and Bill Jackson. Gayle works in a law office, while Bill is retired from FedEx
- His brother, Bryon, was a former receiver at San Jose State (1990-91) and spent two seasons (1992-93) on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad
- An All-America selection as a senior at Long Beach Polytechnic HS, was the recipient of the 2004 Glenn Davis Award by the Los Angeles Times as Southern California's POY. Posted 60 receptions for 1,075 yards and 15 TDs (2 for punt returns), and led his team to the CIF Southern Section championship. In the CIF title game, he was a last-minute replacement on defense and responded with 2 INTs, one of which he returned 68 yards for a TD. Earned All-State accolades as a junior
- Also starred in baseball. Was draft in the first round of the 2005 MLB draft (29th overall) by the Tampa By Devil Rays. Also ranked by Baseball America as the third-best all-around athlete in the Major League Baseball draft prospect pool in 2005 after hitting .380 with 20 stolen bases in his senior season
- Lists shopping as one of his favorite hobbies. "When I was little my mom would spoil me at the mall. My favorite designer is Ed Hardy. It's expensive and flashy."
- Credits his father, Bill, for doing a great job of keeping him out of all the trouble that he could have gotten into living in the Crenshaw section of Los Angeles. "I had friends who've been shot, paralyzed and put in jail. It was unfortunate to see people I considered friends involved in things that could get them killed. If I wasn't involved in sports and didn't have my father to keep me out of those things, I could have ended up the same way."
- Played basketball in HS as well
- Participated in the 2008 NFL Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles, where he participated in photo shoots for various trading card companies
- Claims he has never missed a competitive football game in his life
- Majored in social welfare
