Second RB Spot Important For Eagles Offense

Justin Fargas did all the right things and said all the right things when he met the media during his visit with the Eagles on Friday. Everyone wanted to know if/when he would sign here, and Fargas smiled and deferred to his agent (David Dunn) and made sure to compliment the Eagles organization top to bottom (although he didn't mention the web site. Rats!) right until the time he walked out of the NovaCare Complex into an uncertain future.

What happens now? Well, we wait. And while the Eagles continue to have dialogue with Duke and other agents, we wonder if the two sides will come to an agreement in the future.

The Eagles, by the looks of it, have their minds on adding a running back. They have LeSean McCoy, a second-year player who inspired high hopes with a productive rookie season. They have Eldra Buckley, who opened some eyes last year with good play on special teams and some tough running the few times he had the chance to carry. They have Martell Mallett, a young back who gained some seasoning last year in the Canadian League and who has a good body and enough skills to have earned a contract during a workout early in the off-season.

So the Eagles could use another good player to provide competition, to provide a complement to McCoy. Various reports have linked the Eagles with Fargas, with Mike Bell, with LaDainian Tomlinson. Only Fargas has visited.

There really is no need to move quickly into the market. Beyond those three quality veterans, there are players like Willie Parker and Ladell Betts, players who have had success at the NFL level. The draft class is rich with running backs, too.

And while there is no hurry, necessarily, the decision is an important one. The NFL is a two-running back league. McCoy, while durable as could be in his years at Pittsburgh, needs another back, and the Eagles would be wise to take precautions.

The expectations are very, very high for McCoy. And he has started his off-season the right way, jumping into the weight room and beginning his conditioning weeks ahead of the team's official voluntary conditioning program. If it is true that a player like McCoy will improve the most in his career from year one to year two, he is going to have a great season in 2010.

But no way should the Eagles take that for granted. They know strange things happen to the best-laid plans. McCoy is the featured back here and the coaches are excited about his growth, but the importance of having another quality -- no offense to Buckley or Mallett -- ball-carrying running back cannot be emphasized enough.

Will it be Fargas? He offers an intriguing possibility. So does Bell, a restricted free agent from New Orleans, and certainly the idea of Tomlinson playing here is exciting.

It could be that the Eagles use a high draft pick on a running back. It could be that ...

Truth is, I have no idea how it is going to turn out. I just know that it is an important move, not to be taken for granted.

NEWS, NOTES AND THIS AND THAT

  • The report that the Eagles are "expected" to go after Minnesota restricted free agent Ray Edwards is an unusual one. I guess I just don't see it from my perspective. Edwards is a fine player, but he had 8 1/2 sacks playing next to the Williams monsters at defensive tackle and on the opposite end of Jared Allen. Juqua Parker had 8 last year at left defensive end. I know Edwards had the big game against Dallas in the playoffs, but he is worth a first-round pick as compensation? I doubt, getting right down to it, that the reporter who tossed out the rumor, really just threw it out there to see if it had legs. I could be wrong, but it doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

  • Hank Baskett is back, and he will play well as an Eagle in his role within the offense as a reserve wide receiver -- who is such a good blocker in the running game -- and a special teams ace. I'm excited about the special teams, by the way. I think Bobby April is going to make this the best group in the league. Anyway, Baskett has to get No. 84 back from fellow receiver Jordan Norwood.

  • What else might happen in free agency? Good question. It could be that it is time to really think about the trade route around the league. One week into free agency and the buzz is gone. It was gone after one or two days, honestly. What you get now in free agency is what the Eagles are acquiring: Depth and competition on the roster.

  • The off-season conditioning program for young veterans begins on Monday at the NovaCare Complex. We'll let you know who is around.

  • If Marlin Jackson comes around physically, the Eagles could have some excellent depth in terms of having cover defensive backs. And I still am going to keep my eye on the secondary for the rest of the off-season. The Eagles have to challenge everyone to get this defense to where it needs to be.

  • I've had a lot of conversations over the years with fans on the Discussion Boards about the grass field at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles have done a great job keeping the field fresh the last couple of seasons sodding late in the year, but there are some fans who want the Eagles to go to an artificial surface. The league's report that torn ACL's happen 88 percent more on FieldTurf than on natural grass, as well as the report that sprained ankles happen more frequently on FieldTurf, should help convince doubters that natural grass is the way to go. The league wants to continue to study the data, but the Eagles are going to continue with grass as the playing surface at Lincoln Financial Field.

Matt , you are an idiot and do not deserve to be an eagles fan , new coach , new qb? your kidding , do some homework were one of the most succesful organizations since 1999 , and o guess what happened in that year! Andy and Donovan came on board! You have no football knowledge so maybe you should just stay quiet for the rest of our sake!

Leo we tried to run screens and I don't think any went for positive yards. Yes there were drops, but still I pegged that on the Oline. Coaching was an issue yes I agree play call wasn't great, and that's because they were trying to figure out the battle on the line. All around it was just terrible

I don't understand why so many people in the poll think Fargas is the rb we need. No one else wants him for some reason right?? I think Mike Bell would fit nicely and he is young and I liked what I saw when he was on the field!!

also i agree we can use better slants, crossing routes but in those routes #5's accuracy kills those plays most of the times

well leo u are using the same points i have used in the past on this site, but honestly i think we have the best group of receivers the eagles have had in a long time. i was glad to signed Avant i believe that he is the best receiver we have available i know DJax stretches the field but his lack of size he can be taken out in stretches of games but Avant has great size, run amazing routes, and well the hands no words can describe but he is not implemented enough during the game b/c #5 lacks to acknowledge his other options. he has a tendency of holding to the ball TOO LONG and staring down his first option, he is running out of excuses b/c we do have the weapons on offense to sustain 80 yd drives if he would complete more then 60% of his passes since he is unwilling to gain those yards he use to with his feet.

AR admitted after the game that he was watching the tape pre-game and thought we could beat them deep... there was no game time adjustment... I watched receivers in a twin setup streak side by side... I'm telling you it was the most poorly called game in Eagles history

Leo I agree to an extent. The issue I have is that Mac throws the ball so hard there is no way a Wr can adjust on a 10yrd Cross. That is MAC is infamous for throwing the ball way low. WR can only do so much. Kolb throws a little softer and more catch-able then Mac

10:16 pm ET
peter, they blitzed 8 every play... our receivers ran deep every play... watch the game again... our receivers ran streaks all game... it was unbelievable... the defense played way off of them... I saw celek run a crossing route under the coverage once and he was wide open and McNabb hit him in the hands and Celek dropped it (uncharacteristically) and we never ran it again... you blitz eight, leave three in coverage and your best d-back is out... throw some short stuff, run some short routes and we did not do it... the Raiders did not play it perfectly... we played it horribly
leopizzini
03/13/10
10:13 pm ET
Again the crossing route (which we don't run enough)... one thing the receivers don't do is slow down to 95% speed so that they can adjust to the pass... that's what the great receivers do to make the great QB's look great... break off the line at 100%... head into your break at 95%, come out of your break at 100% and when you are being targeted, change the pace until the QB delivers the ball and adjust to it... then become an open field runner...
peter.adamo@...

10:12 pm ET
Leo I think that the difference with the Raiders game was the lack of our O Line. There was no time and all we had was Underneath passes and their Defense just played it perfect. You can't win a game if your Oline doesn't show up

10:09 pm ET
rhamsee) I would disagree to a point, I watch the routes that the receivers run and they don't do what I call, "clearing and filling"... running off coverage with one receiver and running into the space underneath with another... (they just clear and don't come back to the QB if the coverage plays deep) the real quick passes that I would like to see, don't require thinking... step back and pass... not a progression, but a commitment to a receiver on a quick play... I don't think it's McNabb's accuracy issues... I think it's the play development and calling... I'm pretty firm on that belief... worst example of this was the Raiders game

#5 Likes to force things just a little too much, and he has gotten so use to it he can't hit a simple crossing route. If we are going to be a Top tier team we have to do the little things. If you hit the underneath passes the Defense will have to play back a little more and not rush #5 every play. That is the part of the game that I think Kolb has the advantage, but he can't throw the deep ball like DMac
rhamses730

9:59 pm ET
that's one reason where i think #5's inaccuracy kills a lot of drives. i agree but it seems that #5 doesn't take what the defense gives him i mean that's what i see is the weakness in our passing attack but with kolb its more effective

9:43 pm ET
rhamse) taking advantage of the big play ability by clipping away with high percentage stuff underneath is the kind of balance I would love to see (bring back the screen, the swing pass, the wheel route and the quick slant/seam) especially if we maintain that 60/40 pass to run ratio... take what the D is giving and maintain until they adjust
rhamses730
03/13/10
9:33 pm ET
leo i agree with you 100% i think the big play is good but we barely control the clock the on offense and that also impacts our defense b/c of the time they spend on the field...

9:32 pm ET
That's everything I have to say

9:30 pm ET
I don't think Jackson is going to be a big player in 2010, but he could be a pleasant surprise... he has the ability if he can stay healthy... I would actually have loved to see Sean Jones this season... he's a solid backup to Mikell if he can't play free safety and he's just now at the point where you would expect him to be as close to 100% after recovering from his 2008 ACL... I liked what Babin showed too... he said playing LB in the 3-4 schemes really set him back... I think the same affect was made on Gocong in transitioning to LB... in some way, shape or form... something is gonna have to give if the Iggs are gonna do more in 2010... I think there is a core of players to do it
leopizzini

9:23 pm ET
We definitely need Stew Bradley to be healthy... he erases many of the mistakes made by the DT's... I'm not crazy about Gocong, but he showed a little something in 2008 and if we wiff on a LDE in the draft... I could see Gocong contributing better in that position rather than SAM.
