Eagles Still Quiet Amid NFL Noise

Posted Jan 19, 2012

Teams are moving, wheeling and dealing and making changes. The Eagles are quiet, going about their business privately, preparing for the Senior Bowl and what's after that ...

If it's true that where there is smoke, there is fire, then is it also true that where there is no noise, then nothing is going on? Because, on the surface, there is nothing going on with the Eagles.

Beneath the surface, the Eagles have a litany of issues to address. At the risk of being repetitive, here is the list as I see it ...

THE COACHING STAFF

So much speculation, and so nothing going on. Steve Spagnuolo? He joined the Saints. Mike Nolan? Atlanta.

The Eagles? Juan Castillo is the defensive coordinator and he will lead the defensive coaches to Mobile, Ala. for the Senior Bowl practices next week.

Certainly, there are some tangible questions with the coaching staff. The Eagles need a cornerbacks coach, and they will be flooded with candidates next week at the annual NFL coaching job fair. Then there is the matter of offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who interviewed for the head-coaching job in Oakland and who could be a candidate in Indianapolis with former Eagle Ryan Grigson now the general manager.

It's all a lot to comprehend, if there is anything to think too deeply about. Is it just a matter of filling the role of cornerbacks coach? Or are the Eagles again facing major changes on a coaching staff that underwent a massive overhaul last year?

Whatever is or isn't happening, Reid is quiet. He won't be in Mobile next week to face the swarms of reporters, so we aren't going to know what is really going on with the coaching staff until, well, until we know what is going on.

IMPROVING THE ROSTER

This is a daily process. General manager Howie Roseman has already signed a handful of veterans who will compete for roster spots, among them wide receiver/return man Mardy Gilyard. The team worked out veteran quarterback Trent Edwards, who played with Buffalo and Jacksonville. He hasn't signed a deal with the Eagles. The matter of the Senior Bowl is ahead, and with that the Eagles must organize their draft strategy.

Free agency is seven weeks away, and it is certainly not too early to take the process to the next level in terms of identifying potential players to target and then intensifying the evaluation of each player.

Roseman tweaks the team's roster continually and adjust the depth chart accordingly. Who knows if a player signed today can help the Eagles in 2011? I remember waiting late on a Friday last year for defensive end Phillip Hunt to have a moment for an interview and at the time nobody know that he would contribute as he did to the team in his first NFL season. Many thought Hunt was a roster throwaway. The truth is, every move matters especially when there are a finite (80) number of spots available on an NFL roster.

The Eagles have a good roster. They are strong in a lot of spots. They need help across the board, too, and there are some positions that lack front-line talent. Roseman and Reid know what they have and they are going to be aggressive addressing the roster through current signings, free agency, the draft and the trade route.

FILLING OUT THE PERSONNEL DEPARTMENT

Roseman hasn't been in any hurry to replace Grigson, which indicates his comfort level going into the personnel-acquisition portion of free agency of the staff he has had in place. Roseman wants things, I imagine, as seamless as possible during this critical period of time. Teams have to move forward at this time of the year, rather than take a step back.

So it's possible that Roseman won't replace Grigson until after the draft. Who knows? Roseman will be asked at the Senior Bowl many times about his plans, both by the media and by scouts looking for league gigs.

FOR THE PLAYERS ...

Most of the players have put the NovaCare Complex in their rear-view mirrors, but there are some around recovering from injuries. Those players not in Philadelphia should be back in the weight room in the next week or two, if they haven't already returned. It's a quiet time.

The offseason conditioning program for the team doesn't begin until mid-April, so it is important that the players step up and treat this critical period of time the right way. If they think they can loaf until April, they are sadly mistaken.

The players are like us. They are watching the playoffs and they are lamenting a missed opportunity of a season and they are wondering what is next for the Eagles. We're all wondering. It's awfully quiet, which means, well, what does it mean?
