Third Quarter Recap: Dallas Extends Lead

Posted Oct 20, 2013

Starting the second half with a 3-0 lead, the Cowboys got things going quickly in the third quarter as Dwayne Harris returned the opening kickoff out of his own end zone to the 34 yard-line. Tony Romo led the Cowboys on a methodical drive, finding Dez Bryant for 11 yards on a crucial third-and-two play. The Cowboys pushed the ball deep into Eagles territory, and, on third-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Bradley Fletcher was called for pass interference on Bryant in the end zone. On the very next play, running back Phillip Tanner punched the ball in for a 1-yard touchdown.

The Eagles could not answer the Cowboys score, going three-and-out on their possession. On second down and six from their own 24, Evan Mathis was called for a holding penalty that would put a damper on any would-be momentum.

After another Eagles punt, the Cowboys would go three-and-out. A Cowboys third-down completion to Miles Austin was successfully challenged by Chip Kelly and reversed to an incompletion. The Cowboys would punt once again, as would the Eagles after another quick three-and-out.

The Eagles then picked up some much needed momentum thanks to their defense, as DeMeco Ryans intercepted a Tony Romo pass at the Eagles 34-yard line and brought it all the way back to the Cowboys 30.

After the big momentum swing, however, the Eagles offense was unable to get the ball into the end zone. A would-be J.J. Wilcox interception was reversed to an incomplete pass, after Foles was unable to hit a wide open Jason Avant in the end zone. With second life, the Eagles failed to punch the ball into the end zone. As the third quarter came to a close, Foles was sacked on a third-and-goal play, taking a huge hit and getting up slow. As the teams switched sides at the end of the quarter, Foles was seen heading into the locker room.

As we move to the fourth quarter, the Cowboys maintain a 10-0 lead. The Eagles will have an opportunity to get points on the board to start the fourth quarter.

UPDATE: Foles left to be evaluated for a head injury and was later declared out.
