Third Quarter Recap: Bears Up 31-28

Posted Aug 8, 2014

CHICAGO – A back-and-forth third quarter leaves the Bears ahead 31-28 entering the final stanza of the Eagles’ first preseason game.

Following a forced punt by a combination of the second- and third-team defense, running back Matthew Tucker lost a fumble that was recovered by the Bears. The defense would then hold the Bears to a field goal, which made the score 21-17.

With his first real chance to lead the offense in game action this summer, Matt Barkley drove the Eagles down the field for a 12-play, 94-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 12-yard screen pass to running back David Fluellen, who ran hard throughout the quarter, totaling 25 yards on six carries.

Shortly thereafter, however, Bears quarterback Jimmy Clausen found Chris Williams for a 73-yard touchdown after Williams beat Jaylen Watkins’ attempt to press at the line of scrimmage.

After the Bears defense forced a punt, the Eagles special teams unit made its second big play of the night when Emmanuel Acho recovered a muffed punt. On the very next play, however, Barkley was intercepted by Al Louis-Jean on what appeared to be a miscommunication with wide receiver Josh Huff. The Bears would then turn that possession into a touchdown on a 22-yard catch and run by Michael Spurlock. A two-point conversion then gave the Bears a 31-28 lead.

On the positive side, the Eagles’ young defensive line impressed, led by the likes of Joe Kruger, while linebacker Marcus Smith II made his presence felt as well.
