Though many Eagles fans never got to see him play, Hall of Fame linebacker and center Chuck Bednarik is remembered as one of the best to ever don the color green in Philadelphia. He is one of only eight players in franchise history to have his number retired, and his memorable hit on Giants halfback Frank Gifford remains one of the most iconic images in the NFL.
So it’s little surprise that, in putting together their “100 Greatest Sports Photos Of All Time” list, Sports Illustrated added that signature image of "Concrete Chuck."
The big hit occurred on November 20, 1960 at Yankee Stadium. Gifford went out for a pass from quarterback George Shaw and was leveled by Bednarik. Gifford fumbled the ball, and the Eagles recovered. The Eagles won the game, 17-10. The image was captured by Sports Illlustrated photographer John Zimmerman.
“It was the most important play and tackle in my life,” Bednarik told AOL News’ Dave Goldberg in 2010. “They were from the big city. The glamour boys. The guys who got written up in all the magazines. But I thought we were the better team.”
