In a surprise move Tuesday, the Eagles have released Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin.
A free agent signing in 2011, Babin recorded 18.0 sacks as he earned Pro Bowl honors for the second straight season. Babin had 5.5 sacks in 2012, but head coach Andy Reid said in a statement that the move was designed to give the younger players on the roster a chance to play.
"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years," Reid said. "We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of younger guys in the defensive line rotation."
Babin played in 40 snaps Monday night against Carolina. Rookie second-round pick
