QB Matt Barkley Conference Call

Posted Apr 27, 2013

On whether being selected by the Eagles was something he saw coming: "I did not see it coming. I had a great meeting with (quarterbacks) coach (Bill) Lazor when he came out to USC to work me out. I've had a pretty solid relationship with (head) coach (Chip) Kelly over the last couple years, obviously playing against each other. I have all the respect in the world for him and what he was able to do at Oregon. This comes as a breath of fresh air. (It's) a new beginning. No matter when it happened, I'm just glad to have a home and a place to start working and to start my career."

On why he thinks he was selected in the fourth round: "I'm not too sure. It wasn't my decision to make that call. I'm just excited to be an Eagle. I could not be more excited to be playing there for that city and that franchise."

On how difficult it is to know that he might have been a higher draft pick last year: "I've stayed positive this whole time. I haven't looked back. As I said before, just to have an opportunity. All it takes is one team. I'm blessed that the Eagles believe in me and are willing to give me a chance, so I'm looking forward from here on out. No matter where you end up, it's just the beginning of the next chapter of your life. It's the same with me, I'm just looking ahead and looking forward to work even harder."

On Kelly being impressed with his composure and where he thinks that came from: "I think naturally my character is unflappable. I already had four years of experience in high school playing football and to come in as a freshman in Autzen (Stadium), it's a crazy place to play. With the fans there and just the way the stadium is built and how explosive Oregon is, you really have to just keep to yourself. Because of how Oregon's offense was and they seemed to always be scoring, I just learned to be composed and not get ahead of myself, but to remain the quarterback I was. I think that continued through my career. I like to worry about what I can control and not get stressed or anxious about what is outside of my control. It's just a great feeling to know that I have a home, that I have a future in Philadelphia and I can work from here on up. It was a weird feeling not knowing where you're going to be working, where you're going to have a job. I cannot wait to hit the playbook and hit the field."

On whether he was surprised that the Eagles were interested in him because of Chip Kelly's style at Oregon: "I wouldn't say surprised. I knew they had been interested in me from how their coaching staff expressed it in Indianapolis at the Combine and then at their visits out to USC for the workouts. I knew Chip Kelly had a respect for me. It went both ways. He was able to turn around Oregon and I've been playing against him for the last couple of years. I could tell there was a mutual respect. It doesn't come as a complete surprise, but it was a good wake-up call this morning."

On whether there is part of him that wonders how he will fit into what Kelly wants to do offensively: "I don't even know exactly what direction we're moving in right now. All I know is I'll be wearing an Eagles uniform and looking to help that team. From what I hear, it's not going to look exactly the same as it was at Oregon. The team is different, the personnel is different than what (Kelly) had last year. They have a pro-style coaching staff. If they stick to that, then I'll work in it, I'll be a part of that offense. It doesn't matter what we run, I'm going to give it my all."

On whether there is any rehab still to do on his arm: "No, I'm good to go. I just can't wait to get into minicamps and to prove myself and to show that I do have a strong arm and I am capable of playing in this league and playing strong. Just give me a shot and I can't wait to see where this leads."

On his day so far and how he found out about being drafted: "It definitely was hard to sleep (last night). I knew I was going to wake up early this morning. I actually took a walk with my fiancé this morning and prayed with her just to kind of get my mind off of things. I kind of got a tip that it was going to be early in the round, so we hurried to get back home. I did not expect it to come right off the bat. Of course I got a call from an unknown phone number. I had been getting a couple prank calls last night from unknown numbers. It was good to hear a man's voice who said, ‘Do you want to be an Eagle?' It was comforting and it was a sigh of relief and a new beginning. There are a lot of emotions, but excitement is probably at the top of this list."

On whether he expects to come in and compete for a starting job: "Absolutely, I'm going to come in and compete. My mindset is I'm starting day one. Whatever happens, whatever the situation is, that has to be your mindset. Coming in and competing like it's your job. Pushing myself, challenging myself day in and day out. I think it will be great to be able to learn from Michael (Vick) as a vet who has been in the league a long time, and to learn from a great coaching staff and to push myself. Absolutely, I'm going to come in and work my hardest from day one."
