QB Kafka Released: Edwards Makes It

Posted Aug 31, 2012

Trent Edwards' rise from afterthought to preseason star has culminated in a roster spot. The Eagles have made their decision at third quarterback and Edwards is the man, as the team announced the release of 2010 fourth-round pick Mike Kafka. Kafka suffered a fractured left hand during the first preseason game and did not play in the final three preseason games. While Kafka was out, Edwards finished the preseason with a 100.5 quarterback rating (fifth in the league) while throwing for 489 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

“There was great competition at the quarterback position,” said Eagles head coach Andy Reid. “That’s what football and training camp is all about. In the end, we had to make the difficult decision to let Mike Kafka go. Mike is a class act, a student of the game and a great person and I think he’ll have no problem finding a job in the National Football League very soon.

“On the other hand, I’m proud of the way Trent Edwards conducted himself since the early days of the offseason workouts. He had to fight for everything he earned this summer. He improved each and every day and made the most of every opportunity.”

With the release of Kafka, there are now 55 players on the Eagles roster. By 9 PM tonight, that roster must hold only 53 players.
