Practice Notes: Fletcher Cox And Jason Peters Fielding Punts Is Everything And More

Posted Aug 4, 2017

Number Of The Day: 19,011

Darren Sproles, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, leads all active players and ranks eighth all time with 19,011 all-purpose yards. The multidimensional threat at running back, receiver, and returner is the only player in NFL history with at least 30 receiving touchdowns (30), 20 rushing touchdowns (22), one kickoff return touchdown (2), and one punt return touchdown (7). - John Gonoude

However, Darren Sproles Needs To Watch Out

At 10:31 a.m., just before the final team drills of the day, head coach Doug Pederson brought the team together at midfield. He offered his players a chance to earn some extra time off. If Fletcher Cox and Jason Peters could each field a punt from Cameron Johnston, then the players would win. Peters elected to go first, and the former college tight end said that he lost the ball in the sun before securing it. The pressure was then all on the second-team All-Pro defensive tackle. Needless to say, he delivered in the clutch.

Cox appreciates how Pederson handles the team, but understands that the players must be ready to go come Sunday when the Eagles are at Lincoln Financial Field for the final Open Practice of this year's Training Camp. - Chris McPherson

Practice Observations

1. The team periods in practice began with the starters on offense facing up against the defensive backups down in the red zone. On the third play, Wendell Smallwood raced down the right sideline on a sweep play with Lane Johnson leading out in front. You really got to see No. 65’s athleticism, looking completely under control out on the move to find a defender in space. On the next play, quarterback Carson Wentz delivered a perfect throw to wide receiver Marcus Johnson in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown against cornerback C.J. Smith. Two runs and a completion to wide receiver Torrey Smith later, and Wentz hit Trey Burton in almost the same exact spot for a score, as the athletic tight end was able to keep both feet in bounds to secure the catch. - Fran Duffy

2. Next, the starters on defense took the field to take on the second-team offense. Safety Malcolm Jenkins and linebacker Najee Goode converged for a "stop" on the first play against rookie running back Corey Clement. Defensive end Vinny Curry made a stop at the line of scrimmage two plays later. Quarterback Matt McGloin was forced to dump a checkdown to the flat thanks to tight coverage from cornerback Patrick Robinson downfield on the next rep. A few plays later, defensive tackle Gabe Wright, a former mid-round pick, got good pressure on quarterback Matt McGloin and forced him to break the pocket. The quarterback was hoping to hit a receiver downfield, but Smith blanketed him alongside safety Jaylen Watkins to force McGloin to hold the ball and run for almost no gain. - FD

3. In special teams action, it appears Mack Hollins may have gotten his first reps with the kickoff coverage team. When he took the field, a couple of the veterans, including Goode, were pretty animated in their support for the rookie. Cornerback Rasul Douglas got a rep with the starters on that unit as well. - FD

4. The offense took the field again in a two-minute drill and on the second play, Johnson caught a pass from Wentz that was thrown into a really tight window right between safety Terrence Brooks and linebacker Nate Gerry. It was a great throw and catch from the two second-year players. Wentz completed his next four passes, one to Jordan Matthews, one to Hollins, and two to tight end Zach Ertz before kicker Caleb Sturgis would take the field and convert a 38-yard field goal. - FD

5. The defense came back onto the field and there were a couple of big plays that stood out. Defensive end Steven Means got a quick pressure on McGloin in what likely would’ve been ruled a sack, but the quarterback delivered the throw downfield and it was picked off by Smith in a contested situation. Three plays later, quarterback Dane Evans tried to hit Burton downfield and was picked off by Terrence Brooks in the middle of the field just shy of the end zone. On offense, wide receiver Bryce Treggs made a couple of nice catches during the session. - FD

6. After Peters and Cox fielded the punts, the starters on offense took the field again down in the red zone, where Wentz put on a clinic on the far side of the field. After running one play in for a touchdown, Wentz completed six straight passes for scores, hitting Burton, Johnson, Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Greg Ward and Darren Sproles on consecutive plays to end the day on a high note for the offense. - FD

7. The defense came out one last time, and after Hollins made a great catch on a deep dig route downfield, Watkins came up with what may have been the play of the day, reeling in a one-handed interception by stepping in front of a pass intended for Burton in the end zone. - FD

8. Sturgis got his most extensive work of this year's Training Camp on Friday. His first attempt, the distance of an extra point, landed on the roof of the NovaCare Complex. Tom Rossi, otherwise known as T-4, the team's assistant director of football technology, could have fielded the ball but was unable to make the play. - CM

9. Wide receiver Shelton Gibson rebounded from a wide-open drop in the middle of the field with a nice extended-arm grab away from the body along the right sideline later in practice. - CM
