"It means a lot to me," McCoy said upon hearing the news. "It's exciting. A lot of my teammates have helped me out to get to this point. It's exciting, I can't wait to enjoy this time with my family. I'm taking my son for the first time."
Only five other Eagles running backs have been named to multiple Pro Bowls: Tim Brown (3), Bill Barnes (3), Brian Westbrook (2), Ricky Watters (2) and Wilbert Montgomery (2). And while McCoy has dazzled with his signature moves all season long en route to his current mark of 1,476 yards, he credits the people around him for most of his success.
"Just when Chip (Kelly) came here, we knew we were going to run the ball," McCoy said. "The linemen, they've all been healthy this whole year. They've been blocking so well for me and without those guys, it's not possible to be honored."
In a season that started with so much change, both in the coaching staff and roster, McCoy has been the cog that makes the Eagles offensive machine operate, and he has benefitted greatly from Kelly's run-first mentality. Playing in the league's most explosive offense, McCoy has rushed for 150+ yards in a franchise-high four games in 2013, while no other rusher in the NFL has done so more than once. He also leads the NFL in total yards from scrimmage with a staggering 2,012.
On the day that the players first reported to Training Camp back in July, McCoy spoke about wanting to dominate in the 2013 season and he's certainly backed up his claim. As McCoy explained, there were a few different goals that he had in mind.
"Getting to the playoffs was a big goal for me, and so was making the Pro Bowl and All-Pro," McCoy said. "Those were the types of goals that I set for myself … So far (I think this is my best football). I think there are many more years to come, and (I can be) even better."
After an All-Pro 2011 campaign in which he set Eagles' single-season mark for rushing touchdowns with 17, McCoy's 2012 season was partially derailed by injury problems. Though the doubters may have been out there, McCoy stayed focused on getting back to that All-Pro form.
"I can't really sit at home and wonder what other people think," McCoy said. "I feel like I'm one of the best backs in this league. I prepare like I am, and each day I compete like I want to be the best. I think all that matters is what my teammates think, what this franchise thinks, and what my son thinks."
While the trip to Hawaii to play in the Pro Bowl represents a great achievement, McCoy is still focused on the task at hand –beating the Dallas Cowboys and securing an NFC East title. If that happens, McCoy may not even end up going to the Pro Bowl after all. He could still be back at the NovaCare Complex, preparing to play in his first Super bowl, not his second Pro Bowl.
"I'm focused on Dallas," McCoy said. "It's a nice reward to be named to the Pro Bowl, but we're still set on Dallas. We have a long trip to go, and this is one game of many that we plan on playing, so we just have to take it from here."
