Kelce Looks To Follow Brother's Lead

Posted Feb 22, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS -- As tight end Travis Kelce pursues his dream of reaching the NFL, he has a role model in his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles' center Jason Kelce.

"Jason was one of the better rookies coming in and he started his entire rookie season," Travis Kelce said. "I'm going to have quite a few things to live up to my rookie year."

Jason Kelce's is just two years removed from his draft experience. Even though he has plenty of insight into the process, Jason wants Travis to enjoy the path to the draft for himself.

"He's let me live it my own way, I guess. He told me to enjoy the process, have fun with it," Travis Kelce said. "But at the same time, tell everybody the truth. Tell everybody what you think of yourself and what you think of the whole process itself."

Considered one of the top senior tight ends in this year's class, Travis Kelce is unable to participate in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine. Kelce is a month removed from sports hernia surgery. Kelce said he suffered the injury in Week 3 of this past season, but played through the pain much like another former Cincinnati Bearcat Brent Celek did in the 2011 season for the Eagles. Travis Kelce knew Celek from when Jason played with him at Cincinnati.

"For me to have a guy like Celek walk the way into the NFL and show me the right way to do things and be able to definitely excel in the NFL as well is definitely a plus," Kelce said.

Kelce was a quarterback in high school who played as a Wildcat quarterback during his redshirt freshman season of 2009. Kelce made the transition to tight end on a full-time basis in 2011. He was the Bearcats' leading receiver with 45 receptions for 722 yards and eight touchdowns in 2012.

"This is only my second year of playing the position at tight end. I still have a lot to learn," Kelce said. "I have a lot to develop in the skill set of a tight end."
