K Cody Parkey: I'm Here To Compete

Posted Aug 21, 2014

Cody Parkey was en route from Indianapolis to Atlanta when he got the call from Colts general manager Ryan Grigson. Rather than being outright released, the rookie kicker had been traded to the Eagles. After hearing from Eagles general manager Howie Roseman that the Eagles actually had a game Thursday night, Parkey continued driving towards Atlanta, hopped on a flight, arrived in Philadelphia around 1 AM Thursday morning, underwent his physical early in the morning and prepared for the first night of his audition.

In fact, Parkey and head coach Chip Kelly only met in the locker room prior to Thursday night’s 31-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“He said he was glad to have me and I told him, ‘I’m glad to be here,’” Parkey recalled.

Parkey was called on three times Thursday night, once for an extra point he would convert and twice on kickoffs, which sailed four and five yards into the Steelers’ end zone. Parkey did not attempt a field goal on the night, but Alex Henery’s missed 31-yarder made Parkey a popular target for the media in the post-game locker room.

“I think any time you bring someone in, you’re going to compete,” Parkey said. “I’m going to go out there, do my best and try to win this job.”

As for the state of the competition at kicker, Kelly said the team will obviously need to consider all options.

“I wish I could put my finger on it. I don't know what he's battling. But obviously you have to make a field goal like that. You have to make it,” Kelly said of Henery’s miss. “We obviously needed to bring someone else in, and that's what we did, and we'll see. We've got another week. The good thing is we have a week before we go play the Jets so we have a chance.”
