Good Sign For Eagles: Alshon Jeffery Finding Groove In Offense

One of the bright spots from Sunday's game that shouldn't be dwarfed was the performance by wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.

For the majority of Sunday's contest, Jeffery was covered by one of the NFL's best cornerbacks in Marcus Peters. Still, he hauled in 92 yards, pulled in a team-high seven receptions and secured his first touchdown as an Eagle.

Jeffery's 16-yard score midway through the third quarter swung the momentum in favor of the Eagles. The diving catch, turn, and lunge toward the end zone marked a moment in which the Eagles had the snatched away the upper hand. For a brief moment, the team silenced the raucous crowd at Arrowhead Stadium. It was the first touchdown of the entire afternoon by either side.

The scoring drive itself was arguably the best one of the day. The Eagles took just over four minutes off the clock, ran seven plays, and marched 81 yards to the Chiefs' end zone. The possession had Jeffery's handprints all over it, as he started the drive with an 18-yard reception and ended it with the touchdown.

Sunday's game is a clear sign that the chemistry between quarterback Carson Wentz and Jeffery is improving. However, Jeffery would've sacrificed his numbers for a win.

"Just playing the game within the game. We didn't win the game so that doesn't matter," said Jeffery. "Few plays here and there we left out there that we could've made, but you can get better."

Wentz believes he has good chemistry with the receivers and that he's always had a really good connection with Jeffery. Each of Jeffery's catches moved the chains for the Eagles and his numbers nearly double across the board after last week's contest. Against Washington, he was targeted just 7 times and was limited to three receptions for just 38 yards.

Given his height and outrageous catch radius as a receiver, it came as no surprise that Jeffery was the intended target on the Eagles' last-second Hail Mary attempt to tie the game. Unfortunately, the Chiefs camped out in the end zone and were able to bat the ball out of bounds as time expired. The remarkable part is, the play is one Jeffery thinks he can make.

"Yeah, I believe so," Jeffery responded when asked if he thought he could've made the catch. "But unfortunately plays like that, I don't know the percentage of it but it's very rare."

Next week will be another test for Jeffery on the outside. The Eagles will face a Giants secondary with one of the best cornerback trios in the league in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Janoris Jenkins, and Eli Apple. Regardless the opponent for Jeffery, his aim is to outperform his previous effort each time he takes the field.

"The good thing about it is always you can get better," he said. "Just focus on next week and learn from this one."

The Philadelphia Eagles traveled to Arrowhead Stadium for their Week 2 matchup, but fell to the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-20.
