Game Vs. Panthers: Head Coach Andy Reid

Posted Nov 26, 2012

Injury Report: "(DT Fletcher) Cox has a low back contusion and he’ll have a CT scan in the morning. (WR) DeSean (Jackson) has a rib cartilage injury and he has a little bit of swelling on his chest. He also will have a CT scan and an MRI in the morning. (QB) Michael (Vick) has not been cleared yet. He hasn’t passed his impact test. (RB LeSean) McCoy still isn’t at baseline, so he isn’t cleared."

Opening Remarks: "Obviously the three turnovers – two by (RB) Bryce (Brown) and the one by (KR Brandon) Boykin at the end were part of the problem down the stretch. We also had the penalties on the last (Carolina) drive when we had an opportunity to get off the field. That was a disappointment - that we weren’t disciplined enough to get ourselves lined up properly or stay onside. With that, I thought Bryce (Brown) did some good things. He’s a young guy and he’ll learn from this. He’s a smart kid, but at the moment, it cost us, as did (Brandon) Boykin’s (fumble). Boykin had his best return there and he ended up with a fumble. It’s a shame, because he’s getting better every week as a nickel back. We called on him today to do the returns, and he had a couple of good ones – that one being his best one. We have to learn. We have young guys who are playing in here, so we just have to keep working on getting better. We understand that we have eight losses. We completely understand that. What we’re going to do is to continue to fight and continue to get better and eliminate some of these mistakes that we’re making and play better as a football team."

On Carolina’s first two touchdown drives of the game: "It was two broken coverages. It shouldn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen at all. That’s my responsibility from a coaching standpoint to make sure we get the guys coached up right, and then that they do their jobs. That really falls on my shoulders."

On the recent struggles of the Eagles defense: "It’s the big plays. That’s what’s getting us, and what has gotten us the last few weeks. Unfortunately on a couple of those, there have been coverages that have been blown. Again, that comes down to making sure my players know what they’re doing, and then them going out and executing. I take full responsibility for that. That’s sloppy football."

On Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie’s comments before the season that 8-8 would not be good enough: "We’re going to keep battling. I’m going to control what I can control, and that’s getting better as a team. I have to do a better job with that obviously by how we’ve played here. I’m not worried about all of the other things. I’m worried about winning football games and making sure I get my players coached up to where we do a better job with that."

On whether Lurie has assured him that his job is safe for the remainder of the season: "We really haven’t talked about that. He’s been supportive. Obviously he’s as competitive as anybody and he wants to win games. That’s what he’s in this business for. But we really haven’t gone there. I’m trying to get this football team to win games, that’s what I’m trying to do. That’s where my energy is."

On whether QB Michael Vick will start at quarterback when he is medically cleared from his concussion: "We have to get him healthy here to see where he’s at. He took another test today and he didn’t pass it. I’m not going to put him at risk. I’m not going to do that. That’s not where we’re going with this thing."

On how he will balance playing time between the veteran and young players for the remainder of the season: "You saw some young guys play today. If the young guys are available to play, we’re going to put them in and play them. If that’s the situation, I’m not going to hesitate to do that. But we’ll see how things go here as we continue to roll on."

On how he will prevent the younger players from developing a losing mentality: "They have had good energy. The guys that have been around the team know that. Maybe it’s youthful energy or whatever it is. I know they are going to make some mistakes. I have to live with some of that right now and try to get them better as we go on. With the mistakes, there comes an energy. I don’t see this team tanking it or any of that. I saw great energy tonight, and I saw them play hard. I’ve seen them play hard, and I’ve watched them practice hard. We just have got to get them to come out on the long end on one of these games here."

On the lack of defensive takeaways since the change to Todd Bowles as defensive coordinator: "To be honest with you, we probably didn’t have enough before that either, as far as the turnovers go. We’ve come up short in that area. We’re losing the takeaway-giveaway game. That’s one of the primary stats for winning football games in this league, and we’re right at the bottom of the league in that category. We have to do a better job offensively of not giving the ball away, and then we have to do a better job of taking the ball away. You have to stay aggressive to do that, and we have to continue to do that."

On whether he sees any signs that the players are getting better: "I thought they played better tonight – but two big plays, three turnovers and too many penalties."

On the play of rookie DE Vinny Curry: "I thought Vinny did some good things. I have to take a peek at the tape because I wasn’t focusing right on him throughout the game. I know he was in on a number of plays when he was in there. He’s one of those kids that brings a positive energy. He plays hard and aggressive."

On why it took so long to activate Curry for a game: "It’s just a matter of working the run-pass transition and making sure he was comfortable with that. We wanted to put him in a situation where he could be successful."

On the play of rookie RB Bryce Brown: "Bryce really did what we thought he could do coming into the game. He’s a talented kid, and it’s a shame that he had those two fumbles – particularly the last one, because he was on a roll. Those things cost you, and he’ll learn from it. He’s a smart kid and he’s very, very talented. He has got a great future."

On why rookie QB Nick Foles struggled to get the ball down the field in the passing game: "The one real deep shot that we took, we ended up with a penalty on it, and it took us down to about the 5-yard line. That gave us an opportunity to score there. You have to keep shooting, and we’ll continue to do that."

On whether he has ever experienced a seven-game losing streak at any stage of his coaching career: "I’m not sure I have, as far as this many losses go. I’m not sure I have. But when you’re in it, you have to fix it. I don’t really care what happened in the past. I’m trying to get it correct right now, and that’s the important thing."

On whether he will make a concerted effort to get more playing time for the younger players: "Everybody is playing. Whatever the scenario is, the young guys are having an opportunity. As of tonight, they’ve all had a great experience here in terms of having an opportunity to play."
