Opening Remarks: "Alright, with the injuries. Really (WR Mardy) Gilyard is the only one to talk about right now. He has a hamstring strain.
"That was an embarrassing performance. We obviously didn’t start fast enough. We didn’t get off of the field on third downs early. We’ve got to be able to do that and then they got some big plays on us. We did not have big plays offensively. We started slow again, at least through the first few series there. I’m stating the obvious (that) we need to get better. I need to do a better job."
On whether the team is not responding to his messages this season: "Well listen, I take full responsibility for that performance right there. So however you write it or perceive it, that’s my responsibility to make sure they play better than that. We didn’t play well enough."
On whether there are any regrets about dismissing Juan Castillo after the defensive performance today: "No. I did what I did and (what) I thought was right at that time."
On whether the lackluster defensive performance today was the result of a new defensive coordinator: "I know we need to get better there. We’ve got to be able to get off of the field on third down. We’re going to stay aggressive. That’s what we were on those situations. That’s how it’s going to be."
On whether the first Falcons touchdown was due to a busted coverage in the defensive backfield: "Yeah there was a busted coverage."
On whether the defense was playing zone and something went wrong on the touchdown: "It wasn’t as much a busted coverage as (much as) we needed (to) be softer. We were bailing on that."
On whether he expected the defense to go through growing pains due to the coordinator switch: "Listen, we really didn’t change the terminology (if) that’s what you’re asking here. So it wasn’t a terminology thing. It’s just, listen, you’ve got to go execute and when you get the opportunity to execute, you’ve got to execute."
On why LB
On what type of disciplinary reasons warranted Kendricks’ initial benching: "No. Just disciplinary reasons."
On why there is still a problem with the first drive in the beginning of games on both sides of the ball: "We’ve got to execute better. That’s the bottom line and we’ve got to make sure we’re putting the guys in the right positions. When they’re in the right positions, make the plays."
On whether the team was deflated after giving up a touchdown to the Falcons immediately following a score to bring the team within a touchdown early in the game: "They kept battling to the end. It was (that) the big plays get you. Then you try to bounce back from it. Again, they’re a good team and you’re playing uphill. You’ve got to take care of business on both sides of the ball before that."
On whether the change in coordinators unsettled the defense: "Listen, how can I stand up here and tell you it didn’t with the way we played? I can’t tell you that other than we’ve got to play better. So call the right plays and then execute the plays. It comes down to that. It’s that simple. Talking about it isn’t going to get it done. We’ve got to do it. We didn’t do it today."
On whether the team’s problems are fixable to right the season: "Yeah this is fixable. This is fixable and we’re going to get it right. That’s hard for me to tell you that after a performance like that."
On whether he is convinced he has the talent on the team to right the season: "We have the talent. We have to do a better job."
On whether the problems on the offensive line are keeping the team from utilizing the vertical passing game: "Some of that is in the coverage. That’s what you’re seeing. You’re seeing the deep coverages and so you’ve got to take care of the underneath stuff and then after the catch you’ve got to run with the ball and gain yards. Like (WR) DeSean (Jackson) did on the one but you’ve got to have a number of those. If they’re playing that far off then your underneath game, your short and intermediate games have to work."
On how he explains an embarrassing performance after he said he challenged the team to improve coming out of the bye week: "Listen, I only know one way. That’s to keep going forward and trying to get better. Teach, keep working hard, and work to get better."
On how he explains that the team did not respond to his challenge: "We didn’t do very well. I didn’t do a good enough job challenging them."
On how QB
On whether he thinks this team needs to hear another voice to be successful again: "No, I’m going to keep doing that."
On what factored into punting on 4th-and-2 on the 49-yard line late in the game: "I thought it was the right thing to do to punt."
On whether it is time to make a major shakeup at quarterback or elsewhere on the team: "I’ll go back and look at everything. I’m not going to sit here and make decisions right now. I’m going to go back and look at it and analyze it."
On whether he is concerned this season is beginning to snowball and will turn out like last season: "Right now what I’m concerned with is that we get ourselves better for New Orleans. That’s what I’m concerned about. That’s as far as I’m going."
On what he says about so many fans leaving early in the game and voicing their displeasure: "Listen, I understand it with the way we played. With the way I coached today, I understand. I got it."
