Free Agency Preview: Running Backs

Posted Mar 5, 2016

Heading into last offseason, not many people would have thought the Eagles were going to be big buyers at the running back position when free agency hit. LeSean McCoy had established himself as the franchise’s all-time leading rusher and Darren Sproles was coming off of a strong first season in Philadelphia. But when McCoy was traded to Buffalo in exchange for Kiko Alonso, the Eagles needed to fill a hole at the position.

To do so, the Eagles signed both DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews to multi-year contracts on the very same day. Murray was coming off a season in which he led the NFL in rushing yards with the Dallas Cowboys and Mathews had proven that when healthy, he could be among the elite running backs in the league.

The trio of Murray, Mathews and Sproles never quite achieved what fans had hoped for in their first season in Philadelphia, though all three showed flashes of how valuable they can be when used in certain situations. With Doug Pederson and Frank Reich now at the controls of the offense, the Eagles’ three-headed monster at running back could have a bounce-back season in 2016.

Still, the Eagles could look to get younger and deeper at the position. Kenjon Barner, Kevin Monangai and Ross Scheuerman provide some potential depth, but the Eagles could also look at the free agency pool to add more talent to the position.
