The Eagles started the fourth quarter down only five points after finishing the third with two touchdowns in less than five minutes to pull within 27-22. The Vikings started with the ball near midfield after a short kick, and quarterback Matt Cassel completed a pass to wide receiver Jarius Wright to get to the Eagles’ 38-yard line. Following a sack of Cassel by inside linebacker
Another three-and-out followed for the Eagles, who were forced to punt from their own end zone. Jones’ punt went 43 yards, and cornerback Marcus Sherrels returned it 13 yards to the Eagles’ 36-yard line. Three plays later, Cassel hit wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson in the back left corner of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown. The extra point put the Vikings up 41-22 and effectively shut the door on a potential Eagles’ comeback.
The Eagles followed with a seven play, 80-yard drive – ignited by a 51-yard catch and run by wide receiver
The Eagles then tried an onside kick, which Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson caught after jumping high in the air. The Vikings then embarked on an eight-play, 48-yard drive that chewed up 3:17 off the clock and ended in another Asiata touchdown run to put the Vikings up 48-30 and ice the game.
The Eagles would get the ball back one last time and complete a few passes to move down the field, but without any timeouts and under a minute left, it didn’t matter. The clock ran out following an 11-yard completion to Avant, the final moment of a terribly disheartening loss. The Eagles will now look to pick up the pieces against the Chicago Bears next week at home on Sunday night.
