FOXBORO, Mass. - New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick offered some praise for Eagles quarterback
“I think that the play that they got at quarterback last year was real good,” Belichick said of Foles’ historic 2013 season. “I’m not sure that anybody totally saw that coming but that was a big part of it. They had a lot of explosive plays. They’re very dynamic on offense and created more explosive plays than anybody in the league. They do a good job.”
Of course, Belichick is speaking the truth. Nobody, including Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, expected Foles to rise to the levels he did last season in such a short time. Belichick was asked about his impressions of Foles from the teams’ joint practices a year ago at the NovaCare Complex.
“Obviously it’s two good quarterbacks – Mike (Vick) and Foles,” Belichick said. “They’re two good quarterbacks. I’m just saying at that point in time you’re running your plays, they’re running their plays, you’re not trying to game plan or scheme or anything else. The year that Foles had relative to production, touchdowns, interceptions, his overall handling of a team was great. It was outstanding. I don’t know that at that point [when] we were there at training camp, I would have necessarily said that I saw that coming but you see a good football player. He had a great year.”
Foles, as always, took the comments in stride.
“I mean, I guess it does surprise people,” Foles said. “It’s one of those things where I don’t look too much into it. He’s one of the greatest coaches to coach this game and it’s a great honor for him to say that, but I want to keep getting better. Everybody wants to talk about last year. Last year’s over.”
As for this year, Foles was asked about what he can take from practicing alongside Tom Brady. While Foles and Brady won’t be talking shop throughout practice, Foles said that there’s always something to learn.
“Whenever he’s going, I’m watching him,” Foles said. “Whenever anyone’s going, I’m watching just to watch the fundamentals and watch what they do well. Tom’s one of the best, of course, to ever play the game and it’s great to watch just how he conducts an offense and just where h throws a ball. It’s great being out here from a learning standpoint.
“He puts the ball where the receiver can get it and he’s smart with it. If he has underneath stuff, he takes it right away and he moves on to the next play. I think that’s big. He’s really good at play-action fakes and really just movement in the pocket, I think everybody knows about his movement in the pocket and staying away from pressure.”
