Foles Looks In Line For 1st Start

Posted Nov 12, 2012

It sure sounds like Nick Foles is in line for his first career NFL start.

After relieving a concussed Michael Vick on Sunday, Foles attempted his first regular season passes as a professional and generally acquitted himself well, completing 22-of-32 passes for 219 yards and an 85.3 quarterback rating, though he did commit two costly turnovers. On Monday, head coach Andy Reid announced that Vick suffered "a pretty significant concussion" and hinted that, though the team will go through the post-concussion protocol, it's likely that Foles will be under center for the Eagles next Sunday afternoon against the Washington Redskins.

"I think we'll know here in the next couple days," Reid said. "I think we'll have a pretty good idea. The thing I'm telling you now is I think it's a pretty significant concussion there."

Now, Foles is in line to practice with the first-team offense throughout the week and to prepare as the starter for the first time in his young career. Hand-in-hand with that comes the knowledge that, for the first time, the opposing defense will be game-planning specifically for Foles.

"Preparation is very important," Reid said. "Going against a good football team in the Redskins, another NFC East rival, a loud place. It's important that he has a silent count down and understands that, which he worked on during the preseason, and that he has his fundamentals down and knows his game plan."

Reid added that, until Vick returns, Foles will receive all the first-team reps. All in all, the head coach was generally please with Foles' performance as a pinch-hitter against the Cowboys.

"I'd tell you he did a nice job of keeping his eyes down the field when he was under pressure, made some nice plays there," Reid said. "There were some plays that you'd like to have back, but I thought he did a pretty good job with that. I thought he got the ball out on time. He handled pressure well when it was in his face and he didn't move."

With the Eagles' record sitting at 3-6, the inevitable questions then turned to the season beyond this week. Does Foles have a chance to remain the quarterback moving forward?

"Michael's our quarterback, so I don't want to slight that part, but at the same time, I've got confidence that Nick will do a nice job if given that opportunity," said Reid. "I get excited for every game, but if the kid has an opportunity to start, I'm excited to see him play.

"These are all projections. Michael's hurting right now. Nick's going to step in and be the quarterback until that point comes and then we take it from there."
