Eagles Add OT D.J. Jones

Posted Feb 7, 2012

The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have claimed offensive tackle D.J. Jones off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens. The team also named Keith Gray the new assistant strength and conditioning coach to replace Roger Marandino, who was named the head strength and conditioning coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

Originally a rookie free agent signing of the Miami Dolphins in 2011, Jones, 6-5, 315, was waived by the Dolphins after spending the first six weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad. He was later signed to the Ravens practice squad, where he spent weeks 7-16, before being promoted to the 53-man roster for the final week of the season. The 23-year-old Omaha, NE, native played collegiately at Nebraska, where he appeared in 39 games (17 starts) at both tackle and guard.

PhiladelphiaEagles.com Fandemonium columnist Tommy Lawlor described Jones as a good fit for Howard Mudd's offensive line style. "He moves well laterally and he’s good coming off the ball," said Lawlor after watching some of Jones' collegiate tape. At offensive tackle, Jones joins starters Jason Peters and Todd Herremans along with Winston Justice and King Dunlap, who is slated to be a free agent.

Gray, 38, previously served as the associate strength and conditioning coach at the University of Georgia. He joined the Bulldogs staff as a full-time assistant in 1999 and has since worked with the 2002 and 2005 SEC Championship teams, as well as the 2003, 2006 and 2008 Sugar Bowl teams. Prior to his time at Georgia, Gray worked at Auburn University (1997-99) where he was a graduate assistant for strength and conditioning. He also served as a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois. A native of Stuart, VA, Gray attended Virginia Tech from 1991-94, lettering in football and earning Virginia Tech’s highest strength honor, Super Iron Hokie. At Virginia Tech, he was the teammate of current Eagles assistant to strength and conditioning coach and former All-American, Eugene Chung, during the 1991 season.
