Did You Know? OT Lane Johnson

Posted May 1, 2013

The Philadelphia Eagles will welcome its Class of 2013 for the rookie minicamp May 10-12. As we learn about the new Eagles as football players and begin to project how they will help this football team, here's an opportunity to learn about the players off the field as well. Here's some notes on the Eagles' first-round pick, offensive tackle Lane Johnson ...

  • The 6-6, 303-pound Lane Johnson is 22 years old and was born in Groveton, Texas. He grew up in Groveton and earned all-state honors as a quarterback at Groveton High School. In fact, Johnson wanted to be the next Brett Favre.

“(He was) just a guy that was tough as hell," said Johnson of Favre. "Never hardly missed a game. Gunslinger mentality, just a hard worker."

Fortunately for Johnson, he at least dressed better than Favre did on his draft day.

  • Unable to gain much traction from a recruiting standpoint, he enrolled at Kilgore College, a small junior college in Texas. He was a reserve quarterback for the 2008 season completing 32-of-61 passes for 510 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson made the transition from quarterback to tight end in the spring of 2009 before he transferred later that year to Oklahoma. He redshirted his first year with the Sooners.

In 2010, Johnson made another position switch from tight end to defensive end midway through the season. He made his final transition from defensive end to offensive tackle in 2011 and started 23 games over the past two seasons. Since arriving at Oklahoma, Johnson added over 35 pounds.

  • Johnson may never have wrestled bears, but he is known for doing impersonations of his teammates and coaches.
  • Parents are Ray Ann Carpentier and David Johnson. Carpentier is a social worker and Johnson is a construction worker for the highway department. Lane Johnson was married in January to Chelsea Goodman, a former track and field athlete at Oklahoma. Goodman's father, John, was a defensive end and former second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
