Defense Ready To Get Camp Started

Posted Jul 22, 2014

Even though players don't have to report until Friday for the start of Training Camp, there is a buzz around the NovaCare Complex as some of the Eagles have eschewed the final few days of rest and relaxation in order to get a jump on the 2014 season.

Nose tackle Bennie Logan is one of those players who is enthusiastic about the start of the new football year. After taking over the starting nose tackle job midway through his rookie season, Logan eagerly awaits the opportunity to build upon his strong rookie season. Logan is part of a young and talented defensive line - one that features three starters in Logan, Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton who are all 26 years old or younger.

"It's going to be scary," said Logan, who bulked up to 315 pounds from 309 last season. "We're young. We're hungry. We're ready to get after it."

Logan and three of his defensive teammates - linebackers Emmanuel Acho and Connor Barwin and safety Earl Wolff - attended a luncheon on Tuesday honoring the construction workers of the Stadium Revitalization Project. Barwin, like Logan, was new to Philadelphia in 2013 after signing as a free agent following four seasons with the Houston Texans. A critical component of the Eagles' transition to a 3-4 scheme last season, Barwin understands that the defense will have a much better starting point than a year ago.

"There's going to be a growth of the scheme that we weren't able to do last year," Barwin said. "Then there's going to be more of a focus on exactly the techniques and how to do it instead of just trying to drive home exactly what you're supposed to do or what your responsibilities are. Guys should know that from the start and be able to focus in on more of the smaller details."

On Saturday, the Eagles will have their first Training Camp practice at the NovaCare Complex. Just two days later, fans can see the growth and development of the defense - as well as the stadium - at the first open practice of the year.
