5 Things To Know Today: November 21

Posted Nov 21, 2013

Week 12 of the NFL season kicks off tonight. While the Eagles won't be in action this weekend, here's a chance to reflect on some of the recent performances while looking ahead at some storylines to watch when the team reconvenes next week ...

1. DONNIE JONES DELIVERS AT RIGHT TIME

Donnie Jones has made a lot of huge punts in his 10-year NFL career, but the 70-yard punt he uncorked on Sunday against Washington that pinned the Redskins at their 4-yard line ranks right at the top.

The situation: The Eagles held a 24-16 lead over Washington with three and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. A third-down run by quarterback Nick Foles had initially been ruled a first down, but Washington challenged the officials’ call and the ball was moved back a few feet, short of the first down. So it was up to Jones to come through.

And he did, in a big way. Jones’ kick sailed left and created enough of a concern that return man Nick Williams allowed the punt to bounce. It did just that, and in fact bounced perfectly out of bounds at the 4-yard line with 3:26 remaining. The kick helped Jones earn NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

“For me, given the circumstances and the wind and everything about the game, that was probably my biggest kick,” said Jones. “It was huge. It just felt so good coming off my foot and I got it up into the wind a bit – it was blowing right to left – and the return man didn’t want to take a chance. It worked out perfectly for us.”

2. FAN FORUM: COORDINATORS ANSWER QUESTIONS

The Eagles held a Fan Forum on Tuesday night with defensive coordinator Bill Davis and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and invited season ticket members to call in and join the coaches on a conference call hosted by Eagles Insider Dave Spadaro. Here is the audio from the event ...

3. CARY WILLIAMS LOVES HOW DEFENSE IS BUILDING

Cornerback Cary Williams won a Super Bowl last year with Baltimore, so he knows how a defense needs to play down the stretch. The Eagles have made nice progress throughout this season and have, in fact, not permitted more than 21 points in any of their last seven games - the longest active streak in the league.

“We’re getting there and I also think we all understand that a lot of work is ahead to get to where we need to be,” said Williams. “The play up front has improved, which impacts everyone. I think that confidence is the big reason. Everybody understands what the coaches are looking for and we’ve all worked hard studying that. You see the results. We all feel like it’s improving.”

4. WHAT IS NEXT FOR BRAD SMITH?

The Eagles acquired wide receiver/kick returner Brad Smith on the Tuesday prior to the win over Washington and Smith, wearing No. 16, played in his Philadelphia debut on Sunday. Smith saw action on 17 snaps on special teams as a gunner in kick coverage and a blocker in the return game. He also played one snap from the line of scrimmage, starting out in the backfield and going in motion to the left side of the formation. Quarterback Nick Foles threw a screen pass to the right side for running back Bryce Brown, who galloped 24 yards on the play.

Smith will likely be a special teams player primarily, although the Eagles could mix him in here and there in the offense. It’s also expected that he will challenge for some reps on kickoff returns soon.
