5 Things To Know Today: August 4

Posted Aug 4, 2014

The weekend is over and the Eagles are back on the practice field later today with the preseason opener against the Bears set for this Friday night in Chicago. Let's get this Monday started right. Grab your cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee and check out the 5 Things To Know Today for August 4 ...

1. Did Cris Collinsworth Really Say That?

During Sunday night's preseason telecast of the Giants' 17-13 win over the Bills in the Hall of Fame Game, Sunday Night Football's Al Michaels asked analyst Cris Collinsworth for his Super Bowl pick. Collinsworth replied, "I'm kind of keeping my eye on the Eagles." It should not come as a surprise because of Collinsworth's immense respect for head coach Chip Kelly. "We don't see teams or coaches willing to buck the system the way that he has," Collinsworth said in December. "He's forcing me to think about the game of football in ways that I haven't before."

2. Don't Tell Texas Or Oklahoma What Collinsworth Said

According to a survey on the NFL's Reddit page, the Eagles are the "most hated" team in the states of Texas and Oklahoma. Cowboys fans must still be angry over cornerback Brandon Boykin's division-clinching interception in Week 17 of last season. Conversely, the Cowboys are the favorites to dislike in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, among other states. The Eagles and the Cowboys renew their rivalry for the first time this season on Thanksgiving in Arlington, Texas.

3. Holding Off The Rookie

Brad Smith has been the first-team slot receiver throughout Training Camp, despite the daily headlines garnered by rookie Jordan Matthews, who is supposedly nipping at Smith’s heels. Despite the competition, though, it’s become common to see Matthews approaching Smith throughout practice, seemingly asking advice from the person whose job he’s hoping to take.

“I don’t know about (taking him under my wing), but I know I just try to help him as much as I can,” Smith, 30, said Sunday. “There were always guys that helped me, Jerricho Cotchery, (when I was on the Jets), whenever I would have a question he would be willing to answer it and I just try to do the same thing.”

And what of the nature of helping your direct competition?

“I don’t think of it that way,” Smith said. “I think of it as putting ourselves in position to win a championship. I’ll worry about how I can get better each and every day, how I can help Jordan, how I can help Josh (Huff), how I can help (Jeremy Maclin) or (Riley Cooper) of Jeff Maehl or Damaris (Johnson). We’re just trying to help each other out.”

4. Huff Enjoys Flying Under The Radar

As Jordan Matthews commands the attention from those who have watched the Eagles' training sessions, the other drafted receiver has no problem plying his trade out of the spotlight. "My job is to do what I can to help the team get better," said third-round pick Josh Huff. "Quite frankly, I love flying under the radar."

It will be difficult for Huff to stay out of the spotlight if he continues to make highlight-reel grabs like the one he hauled in from quarterback Mark Sanchez on Sunday. Huff explained that the biggest transition from college to the NFL is how physical the defensive backs play. "There's a lot of holding that isn't called. There's a lot of pass interference that doesn't get called," he said. "With my strength, which is my physicality, I have to go out there and do that as well and use my physicality to get open.

5. Sanchez Opens Up About Life With The Eagles

Quarterback Mark Sanchez was the guest on the first Training Camp edition of the Eagles Insider Podcast. The quarterback discussed the transition from the Jets to the Eagles and delved into many of the aspects of adjusting to new surroundings including the fan base. He also described his trip to Brazil for the World Cup in the time before Training Camp began.
