A bum knee limited Todd Herremans for much of the season, even after having successful arthroscopic surgery in early October. Still, Herremans started 15 games at left guard in 2007 for an offensive line that produced the NFL's scrimmage yards leader, running back Brian Westbrook.

The team's best unit in 2006, the offensive line was up and down in 2007. A feather in the unit's cap was the amazing season turned in by Brian Westbrook (1,333 yards rushing, 771 receiving). Overall, the line did a nice job creating space for Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter, who collectively averaged 4.8 yards per carry.

But the unit also has to shoulder some of the blame for the 49 sacks absorbed by Eagles quarterbacks as well as the offense's struggles in the red zone.

In 2006, Philadelphia's offensive line was one of only two units in the entire league to start the same five players in all 16 games; in 2007, William Thomas and Shawn Andrews each missed one game. Herremans played, but did not start against the Giants on Dec. 9.

A fourth-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2005, Herremans has made the transition from small school college (Saginaw Valley State) to the NFL, and from offensive tackle to offensive guard. Herremans has the requisite skills -- the strength, the toughness, the intelligence and overall athletic ability -- to play both guard and tackle. He played tackle throughout his career in college and his rookie season in the NFL.

Herremans made the move to guard in 2006 and has been there the last two seasons. But given the late-season emergence of Max Jean-Gilles, coupled with veteran tackles Jon Runyan and Thomas in the late stages of their career, Herremans could be back at tackle within the next few years.

Herremans played OK, and would have been much more dominant had he been healthy. With the emergence of Jean-Gilles, Herremans is likely to have some real competition at left guard in the summer. He made a smooth transition from left tackle in 2006, and is going to have to get to a higher level to fend off the powerful Jean-Gilles this year.

The Eagles have a very encouraging situation up front offensively. There is some real competition, and as they say in the game, competition brings out the best in players. With that premise in mind, we should see the best of Herremans this season.
