Gaffney, Reed Among Roster Cuts

Wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and safety J.R. Reed were among 17 players released Saturday as the Eagles trimmed their roster to the mandated 53-player limit.

Earlier in the day, the team traded center Hank Fraley to Cleveland and sent fullback Josh Parry to Seattle. Each player brings back an undisclosed draft pick in 2008.

Meanwhile, linebacker Chris Gocong, the team's third-round pick in April's draft, was placed on Injured Reserve. He is still suffering from a stinger. Joining him on IR is offensive lineman Stefan Rodgers, who was injured in Friday's preseason finale. Rodgers is a prospect the team added during training camp.

LB Chris Gocong
Gocong was limited all summer by his injury.

"Andy (Reid) and (head athletic trainer) Rick (Burkholder) can talk more about this, but it's a situation where we knew right when it happened that he's either going to be okay or he's out," said General Manager Tom Heckert. "There was no gray area.

"It's a strengthening thing. He lost strength in his arm. It just hasn't come back fully yet. It's come back a little bit. So, he went to a doctor and his prognosis was that we're going to have to put him on IR. He's going to go see a bunch of specialists and we don't know exactly what's going to happen."

Heckert said Gocong's injury is not career-threatening and that, in the end, it could have a silver lining.

"If it would have happened right in the first part of camp and he would have practiced all the way through, then it wouldn't have been good," said Heckert. "But, he just didn't practice hardly at all this year. So, in the long run I think it's going to be beneficial to Chris and probably us, too."

As far as the cuts, Reed was among five former draft picks released by Philadelphia. Matt Ware, Trey Darilek, Dexter Wynn and Keyonta Marshall were the others.

Reed was in the mix as both a return specialist and safety after missing the entire 2005 season due to injury. He fought his way back after damaging the peroneal nerve in his leg in a freak accident during the 2005 off-season.

Of course, the other surprise casualty of the final cutdown was receiver Darnerien McCants, a special teams standout who had a nice training camp and preseason.

Below is a complete look at the players cut by the Eagles on Saturday. After 12 noon Sunday, clubs may establish their eight-player practice squads.
