He will never be mentioned in the same breath as Donovan McNabb, Randall Cunningham, Ron Jaworski, Sonny, Jurgensen, and Norm Van Brocklin, however, the most astute Eagles fan can easily recall the name Brad Goebel.

Goebel was one of five quarterbacks who guided the Birds' offense during that infamous 1991 season. Cunningham, the starter at the time, suffered a season-ending knee injury on opening day at Green Bay.

And apparently there are a few Eagles fans that still appreciate Goebel's effort even today.

"It's funny because once a month I'll receive Brad Goebel football cards in the mail, sent from various Philadelphia fans asking for an autograph. So I gladly autograph them," Goebel said. "Eagles fans are very special and they made my experience in Philadelphia very memorable."

Goebel spent just that one season with the Eagles. He went from third-string (QB) to Philadelphia celebrity in a matter of months.

"Going from holding the clipboard in training camp to being the lead story in newspapers and on television throughout Philadelphia was great," Goebel said. "And hearing the fans chant things like 'let the kid play' is quite an experience. I definitely had my 15 minutes of fame."

The free agent rookie out of Baylor University was given the keys to the Eagles offense for games six and seven of the '91 season, leading the team against Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

"It was an exciting time, but very difficult because I only had one week of practice taking reps with the first-team," Goebel said. "The learning curve and speed of the game was accelerated. But they kept the game plan simple and I had a lot of trust in both Keith Byars and Keith Jackson, knowing they would get open and dumping the ball off to them.

"However, the offensive system was mainly designed around the athleticism of Randall and his ability to make big plays."

Goebel spoke about the importance of familiarity within an offensive system, especially for a young inexperienced quarterback who may be forced into game action.

"Just look at the success of [former Eagles QB] A.J. Feeley back in 2002 when given his chance because of injuries," Goebel said. "The West Coast offense works well for a young quarterback because you're required to get rid of the ball quickly, which takes pressure off an inexperienced quarterback and allows the skilled players to make plays.

"But at that time our offense was designed a little bit differently."

One teammate that Goebel really respected while in Philadelphia was fellow quarterback, Jim McMahon:

"Jim had such toughness, competitiveness, and so much knowledge of the game," Goebel said. "He is a great family guy, and would do anything for his teammates. Being a young quarterback, I really appreciated his leadership."

Goebel's NFL career continued after he left the Eagles. He enjoyed stints in Cleveland, Jacksonville and Washington.

The 37-year-old Goebel is now a proud father who resides in Horseshoe Bay, TX, and works as a sales consultant for Horseshoe Bay Resort Reality. In his downtime, he enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, and being active in his community.

"I enjoy running the 'Brad Goebel Football Camp,' aimed at kids 9-13 years of age, and teaching them the basics of football and the quarterback position," he said.

"I have also served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Highland Lakes for six years. I'm very active in promoting healthy activities for children."
