Who Is Number 84, You Ask?

PITTSBURGH -- There was confusion in the press box. It was the fourth quarter and quarterback Andy Hall was scrambling for time as the pocket collapsed.

Hall, for better or worse, chucked the ball downfield. The receiver who no one knew cut his route a bit. The receiver who no one knew made an adjustment. The receiver who no one knew pulled in the catch and scampered down the sidelines before being dragged down just yards away from the goal line.

It took 67 yards to confuse the press box. But by the end, everyone knew Chris Samp.

WR Chris Samp was an unknown until Monday night
During the last week of training camp, the tagline was, "Samp Here For Camp." His first stint lasted less than a week before being released. He was picked back up a few days later to very little fanfare. Heck, he didn't even have his last name on the back of his jersey during training camp!

Nonetheless, Samp eagerly awaited a game. The Winona (Mn.) State product is a "gamer", insisting that he plays best when it counts.

"I've always been able to step it up in the game," Samp said. "For me, it slows down a little bit. I've been able to make the clutch catches."

On Monday night, the 67-yarder was his only catch, but it was good enough to make him the Eagles' leading receiver. It also left fans scratching their heads about who number 84 is.

Samp knows the odds are stacked against him. There are 12 receivers on the roster, and most likely only five spots for the taking. Three or four of those spots are already set.

But Samp doesn't worry about that. He can't. All he can do is continue proving himself, continue making plays and garnering some sort of attention. The way he sees it, every preseason game is an audition.

"I was lucky I was able to play and get an opportunity," Samp said. "There are guys who come in undrafted, or they get switched positions. A lot of the receivers go undrafted and hopefully you can a least get the practice squad."

As the preseason progresses, there will be more opportunities for him. If he keeps showing the paws he displayed on Monday night, there might be a place for in the league - if not in Philadelphia, then elsewhere.

That being said, if he has his way, he'll be an Eagle. He is aware of long shots who've made the Eagles roster, specifically mentioning running back - and converted receiver - Reno Mahe.

"It's a good team to be with," Samp said. "It's a good situation, and hopefully I can just make the most of it."
