Time Out With ... Matt McCoy

"Since the last mini-camp ended, I've just been training so I can get in the best shape of my life. You have to be fully prepared for the grind of training camp. Two practices a day, in that humidity, you have to be in shape.

"I went back to California for two weeks. I spent a week with my family and I worked out with my old team at San Diego State. We have a pretty good trainer down there, so we were hitting it pretty tough. Jon Francis, the strength coach, does a good job of working us out.

"I went to the Rookie Symposium for a couple of days. I met a lot of the rookies out there and I already had a lot of friends from the different colleges. You learn a lot of good stuff, it's a good program that they have set up out there. (Former NFL player) Darrell Russell is a friend of mine. He has the same agent as me. I used to work out with him in San Diego. (Jets DE) John Abraham was there, (former WR) Cris Carter was there. Everybody had their stories on what to avoid and what to look out for. Bad things are out there so you have to keep your nose clean. You can't put yourself in a bad situation.

McCoy has been floored by Jim Johnson's extensive scheme
"Cris Carter's story stood out. He came here (to Philadelphia) as a rookie. He said he got caught up in the drugs and alcohol and partying. He said he lost his focus. When he got cut, he said the biggest thing for him was the shock because ever since he was a kid he's always been on a team. He said he felt weird because he had no place to go.

"Once he got picked up by Minnesota, he knew he had to change his life because that's what he wanted to do.

"What I learned was how life in the NFL is so short. You want to put as much work in now because all you are going to have is memories. You want to have a lot of memories. I want to put as much work as I can. This is the best place I can be, this is the best situation I could be in.

"I've never won a championship before. Hopefully, the Super Bowl will be the first. I can go back home with a Super Bowl ring. I have a lot of friends at USC and they show off their National Championship rings. I never even went to a bowl game, so I'm a little bit jealous. They ask me if I want to wear it out and I tell them to get out here. So, I'm hoping to go back to California with a Super Bowl ring. That would be better than everything combined.

"In college, the weight training is like death. They make you do 50 reps at a certain weight. Here (in Philadelphia), they're preparing you for the long season. There it's only 10 games. Not a lot of people are going pro, so they grind you and get the most out of you that they can. It's real intense in college. Here it's more endurance and getting prepared for a 16-game season. And that's not including the preseason or the playoffs.

"The training program here is better for your body. We don't do cleans while there you're doing those and Olympic lifts. Here it's more machine weights and things that will get you ready for the long season.

"Kirk (Morrison, college teammate drafted by Oakland) was out there for a week. We're real good friends and he's there, we'll workout together. We play him in our first home game. When I meet him on the field, he's going to get whooped up. I'll have to throw him around a couple of times and say some things that will hurt his feelings. But mainly we've been talking about the mental game of football because that's what it is more than anything else. I'm trying to learn the scheme. You can't really play unless you know what you are doing.

"Coach Johnson's scheme is unbelievable. He has over 100 blitzes. They threw a lot at me during those camps, and there was a lot of indecision on my part. That's why I'm here now. They throw the whole book at you and you're indecisive because you're not exactly sure where you have to be. It makes you second guess yourself and in football you can't think, you have to react.

"I've been working out with Keith (Adams) and Jeremiah (Trotter). They've talked to me about keeping my nose clean and they've shown me the ropes. They're showing me the right thing to do and that I have to stay out of trouble. They're teaching me how to prepare for my new life."
