2005 NFL Draft: Brown, Patterson In Philadelphia

April 24, 2005 | Last Updated: 4/24/05 6:40 PM ET | Comments (0)

Patterson: On whether he was surprised that he was drafted by the Eagles: "The Eagles were one of the teams that were talking to me. I talked to them and had a good conversation with the defensive line coach [Tommy Brasher] up at Indianapolis. But I didn't know what to expect. Going into this draft, everything was just up in the air. I didn't know where to expect to be drafted, 1st or 2nd [round]. I just went in there hoping for the best.

Patterson: On whether he expected to be drafted before USC teammate DT Shaun Cody: "Actually I didn't. I heard a lot of talks about what was going on, but I didn't think I was. I remember I called him up before the draft on Friday night. I was like, Alright are you ready?' I told him he was going to be in the top 20."

Patterson: On whether he knows about people talking about his height as a disadvantage: "Yes. I've been dealing with that ever since I came out of high school into college. I don't feel like it's a problem. I feel like I get the job done and it works out for me on the field. I use it to my advantage. I go out there and play ball just like everybody else."

Patterson: On whether the Eagles talked to him about how he fit their mold by being quick on defense: "Yes. Actually I just came up and talked to the coaches and they like my whole style, the way I play the game. They think I could do real well here."

Patterson: On why he transferred from Sacramento to Southern California in high school: "My aunt and my uncle had moved down to Southern Cal because my uncle is in the military. He had to move down there and I just went down for a visit. My cousin was in a summer football program down there at Los Alamitos High School. Since I was out there, I just did it for fun. I remember that my coach really liked the way I played ball and they really wanted me to stay out there.

So, the next thing I knew I was calling my mom and dad up and telling them that I really liked it down in Southern Cal. I asked them if I could stay out there and they saw it as a great opportunity for me. They knew it was a great school and that Orange County is a great spot for high school football. They just agreed with it and said, Alright. If you really want to do it, you go ahead and stay."

Patterson: On whether he thinks he would have come as far as he did from a football perspective if he hadn't transferred: "I don't think I would have. I know up in Sacramento I probably wouldn't have played football. I probably would have just hung out with my friends and did things the way I did out there. I think everything that's happened is really great."

Brown: On whether he was surprised that he wasn't drafted in the first round: "I was a little surprised when the day kept going and I wasn't getting drafted. But when I got the call from Philly, that pretty much dissolved any feelings I had about not going in the first round. I felt like this was the perfect opportunity for me and the perfect situation to come in, make an impact and get some playing time for a great team."

Brown: On whether the fact that he had to share the spotlight with teammate WR Fred Gibson at Georgia caused any type of competition: "I don't ever think it was a battle between us. It was good having a receiver on the other end that was just as good as me. It pretty much helped the offense move, and it helps you get open if you have another good receiver on the other side that can take up some of the attention."

Brown: On whether he thinks he'll have any trouble picking up the Eagles complex offensive scheme: "No. At the Senior Bowl, I think I saw that [Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Jon] Gruden's and Coach [Andy] Reid's offense are quite similar in some ways. I think I picked that offense up pretty quickly, so I don't think I'll have any problems with knowing the terminology and picking up the offense."

Brown: On how much playing other sports in high school helped his football skills: "I think they helped a lot. Basketball, you have to be in great condition and shape to run up and down the court. Track is all speed work. You can never have enough speed playing football."
