Eagles Trade WR Brown To The Bucs

March 8, 2010 | Last Updated: 3/8/10 10:10 PM ET | Comments (36)

Well, the long-awaited answer regarding the future of Reggie Brown in Philadelphia has been delivered.

The Eagles announced on Monday evening that they have traded wide receiver Reggie Brown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed draft pick in 2011 (reported by Tampa Bay's official web site as a sixth-round draft choice). This is Howie Roseman's first trade as the team's general manager.

It's ironic that Brown's five-year tenure with the Eagles ends in this regard. Brown was a second-round pick out of Georgia in the 2005 NFL Draft. The pick the Eagles used was originally acquired through a trade with the Miami Dolphins in 2004 (QB A.J. Feeley). In 72 career games (45 starts), Brown had 177 catches for 2,574 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Brown was thrust into the spotlight immediately his rookie season as Terrell Owens was a distraction all year long, which eventually resulted in his dismissal from the team. The other starting receiver entering that year, Todd Pinkston, tore his Achilles tendon in training camp and never played another NFL game.

The 6-1, 197-pound Brown proved that he belonged in the NFL his rookie year, providing a silver lining in what was otherwise a disappointing season. Brown set the franchise-rookie record for receptions by a wide receiver with 43 to go along with 571 yards and four touchdowns. That record has since been broken by DeSean Jackson, but Brown proved that rookies could indeed flourish in Andy Reid's offense.

Brown caught eight touchdown passes in 2006 and a career-high 61 passes in 2007. It looked like the Eagles had a formidable duo at the wide receiver position for years to come with he and Kevin Curtis, who was signed as the big-ticket free agent prior to that '07 campaign. However, a combination of injuries and the emergence of Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant has diminished Brown's role on the field. In the last two years, Brown had just 27 catches and one touchdown.

The Bucs certainly are interested in upgrading their wide receiver corps as it looks like their top receiver from last year, Antonio Bryant, will sign elsewhere. He is scheduled to visit with the Bengals on Tuesday.

This announcement comes on the same day that the Eagles re-signed Avant, who was a restricted free agent, to a five-year deal.

UPDATE: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the trade is for Tampa Bay's sixth-round pick in 2011.

A change of scenery is probably the best thing that could have happened for Brown. I thought we could have got a little more than a 6th for him though.

I love y'all faith fullness in our wr's that we already have but we want to be superbowl champions n thas not going to work with those unproving guys from training camp like norwood we need vets the way I look at it we only have 3 wr's maybe 4 cause curtis idk yet about his recovery we need something else like a big possieon and great hands wide reciver to go with out speedy wideout's

You are only missing one because we still have Curtis. Peanut, JMAC, Avant, Norwood, Curtis and I'm sure we will find another WR if that is the case. There are some decent one's out there still.

Is seems to me and I am by far not an expert that the FO is clearing a path for youth by riding themselves of bad contracts. It appears (to me anyways) that the eagles are primed to make a big trade to accept a large contract that would have fit under the projected cap (if there was one) which I agree with because if the CPA get's fixed teams like Chicago are not going to be able to keep their entire team because of the overspending. I like the new young look. We have some young folks who can surprise us such as C Shipley and WR Norwood. TC this year will be very interesting. BRING IT ON can't wait to see the final plan in action

how come everyone seems so sad about Reggie getting traded when a year ago everyone wanted to release him... a 6th round pick is better then nothing... And you guys act like Andy doesn't know our defense needs help... Obviously he wants to make a young defense to go with the young offense

i dont care what anyone says, i know our defense needs help especially with players coming off injury and being released, but our offense needs help. ive been saying we need a number 1 reciver with size to compliment jackson. such as moss -welcher. fitzgerald-beaston. we should release curtis next. losing brown opens up the possibilty of a wr. we need it. we should have took matt jones for cheap. marshall would be nice. i dont care about his issues (moss-welcher). nothin is left other than to trade for a wr. im ready to win and management needs to break the piggy bank. we didnt even sign rolle at saftey. so what draft another inexperienced saftey?

Why did we trade Reggie Brown? He was a solid #4 receiver. IMO

Sad to see reggie go but its for the better. We have six draft picks in the first 4 rounds. This could be very exciting because we could get some high quality players that could make an impact next season. And 2 sixth round picks. We could have one of the best draft classes we have ever got. There are some big physical players that are eager to play. If only we could get that back from Vols. He could compliment shady mccoy. We need a thumper back. We need a SS and LB maybe 2. A nice DE would be sweet to. I hope we can find a late round phenom. I'm praying.....

kind of off topic but i think the draft this year should be pretty straight forward for the eagles. 1st round get carlos dunlap if he falls or possibly mays if no one else is left at DE then second round trade up and get navarro bowman who i think is a must for the eagles to get in the draft and is said to be the best 4-3 linebacker and then 3rd round go for a safety like nate allen if hes there or the guy out of georgia after that just stock up with OL maybe a WR and RB

I am not quite sold on boldin if we could have gotten him. (Injury prone) I don't think we could have landed a brown for boldin deal without getting had from some of our picks (which we know we may nned now). Mikell is a good blitzer but he can get burnt. Sheldon is the only consisting tackling secondary player we have at the moment.(be crazy to trade him! are you serious?!) I think we could still make a splash before the draft but we missed some moves too trying to be cheaper like westy said. I understand it though because you don't want to go for broke on one or two players. We should have picked up taylor b4 the bears did but we can fix that problem if we do things right btw now and the offseason. go birds!!!!(still love yaw tho I thought we really missed out on some of the other guys)......Weaver is coming back!!!! I think vick will get gone too thru trades

personally i'd keep brown, pattersohn, and mikell.curtis can go and laws is on the fence. brown was a case of trade low or be cut. his value was low because he never put ou great numbers. I don't know where these inflateds values come from but I don't think we could have gotten more.

I am glade we received something for Reggie his value and his role has been slipping for sometime. Despite, I do hope he has success in Tampa, he is a high character guy.

they might have been able to get more for him if they would have made the deal before boldin went to bmore, boldin is head and shoulders above brown even with injuries and he went for a 3rd and a 4th not to mention az had to send a 5th as well. browns production doesnt come close to resembling boldins which is why he was only worth a 6th.

Glad they finally dropped the Reggie Brown experiment he was a solid back up, but he was definitely being paid way to much for not having any type of role on this team anymore. My feeling was they should get rid of Brown and pick up Antonio Bryant in case someone got hurt he would be more than a solid backup and he has the size that we lack when trying to score in the red zone that could be his role on this team and he would push for a starting spot creating competition for Djack and Jmac which would keep them from getting complacent. Bryant could go up and get the ball over the undersized corners in a way our smallish receivers can't. Yea our receivers are great in space, but when the feild is shortened they're not getting open. The only time we didn't have problems in the red zone was with Chad Lewis who was a TE and the only receiver that was great in the red zone was T.O. Bryant has his size without all the baggage, but it looks like the Bengals are getting him!

On NFL.com it says, Jason La Canfora reported that the trade is for a sixth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. So which is right?? Ide much rather prefer the 2010 draft pick.

Giving away Brown for a 6th round pick, yeah the Eagles should have gotten more but if Curtis is healthy Brown would be our 5th receiver. I am not to concerned about that. If they need to they can get someone off the wire to fill in. What is bothering me though is that the Eagles havent even brought anyone in for a free agent visit. Our D needs alot of help at LB, Safety, DE & we cant expect to get all of that from the draft.

alright so were getting more and more and more money(which technically is unneeded anyway)....and what is it were going to do with it? how about something useful? i mean that would be nice dont you guys think? or are we going to make our team no better but be the richest team in the league? which is pretty useless at this time in the NFL

This is bad news judging by first impression I'm afraid this guy is a figure head and not a football proficient person. A pick this year and a conditional next year would have impressed...
