Eagles Tender Nine Restricted Free Agents

March 4, 2010 | Last Updated: 3/4/10 7:49 PM ET | Comments (12)

The Eagles offered a one-year tender to nine of their restricted free agents on Thursday night.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs received the highest tender, a first-round level, which means that if another club signs him to an offer sheet, the Eagles have seven days to match the offer. If they choose not to match, the club will receive 2010 draft pick compensation which in Hobbs' case is a first-round draft pick. NFL teams are permitted to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets from March 5 to April 15.

See the chart below to find out what the other restricted free agents were tendered. In the case of Sav Rocca, the Eagles would receive no draft pick compensation if he is signed by another team to an offer sheet and the Eagles decline to match it. Since Alex Smith was not offered any tender, he will become a free agent at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow and is free to sign with any other team, including the Final Eight playoff teams who have limitations as to who they can sign in free agency.

Earlier today, we broke down the financial value of the one-year tenders.

Hobbs and Leonard Weaver are two of the 212 players in the NFL who would have been unrestricted free agents in a capped year. However, since there is no extension of the Collective Bargaining Agreement - and it's not going to happen by midnight - players need six years of NFL service to become unrestricted free agents instead of the typical four.

Six other Eagles also fell into this category - wide receiver Jason Avant, guard/center Nick Cole, linebackers Chris Gocong and Omar Gaither, guard Max Jean-Gilles and Smith. Rocca and linebacker Akeem Jordan (each of whom have three years experience) were going to be restricted free agents no matter what happened with the CBA.

The Eagles have four players who will become unrestricted free agents at 12:01 a.m. They are defensive end Jason Babin, linebackers Jeremiah Trotter and Tracy White and safety Sean Jones.

dejor2008: This isn't Madden NFL 10. We can't just sign some of these players with the snap of our fingers. I do like your thought of drafting Earl Thomas, but sign all these aging veterans? Havn't you been paying attention to the roster the past two years? There are very few older players on the roster. McNabb is one of them and his is definetly worth more than a second and third round selection. I'm sorry but one of the quarterbacks is leaving and the head coach said it himself: McNabb is the starter next season. As for Clemons, Curtis, and Howard, I'm not sure, but I do know that they deserve a chance in training camp to prove that they have still got game. (Also, you stated near the end of your post that McCoy is still a rookie. McCoy is now offically a year pro.)

im suprised hobbs got a first round tender, i think that means they really wanna keep him, hes a great kick returner, and if he works hard enough i think he cud push sheldon out of his spot and make sheldon move to nickel. Weaver will most likely get a long term deal i hope avant get done to cuz he is a great possession receiver. We also need nick cole hes good depth, i really hope gocong goes.

If anyone thinks that a rookie is going to make an impact on the eagles d this year then he is mistaken. They need to sign Peppers, Sharper, Chester Taylor and Dansby. Then draft Earl Thomas, and load on up D the rest of the draft. Trade Mcnabb for a 2nd and 3rd. Draft a rb and a guard with those extra picks received from Dmac trade. Start Kolb keep Vick. Cut shawn and stacey andrews, CClemons, KCurtis, DHoward. If these cuts are made birds save a lot of money and upgrade. Sharper for 2yrs can teach Thomas,Harris and Demps to be pro's and he can still play. Abiamiri can be a backup to Peppers and Dansby can start with AJordan and Stew. That Defense is a huge upgrade over the one we saw this year with a combo of savy vets and talented young players. CTaylor backs up Shady or starts and the rookie can watch and learn. Kolb is the accurate system QB that the O needs.

We get to match any offer to Weaver. No one is going to through a big contract to him. Besides an extra second round pick in this draft is gold!!

Raheem Brock of the Colts hasn't been tendered. That might be a guy the Eagles might be able to get to play LDE.

Hobbs at 1st round level? That can't be right can it, unless a trade is coming down in the secondary? Rolle or Atogwe and Morrison or Brackett would be a positive free agency from my viewpoint. Get Avant and Weaver locked up long-term!
