I covered this in an article and sent an email to the Ed Block foundation asking them for feedback. I have not heard a reply as of this date. This award is now meaningless to the good players who deserved it - give an award to a parolee who did what he was supposed to do on parole conditions? Real men, real players took time out of a busy schedule to do the right thing: be a hero for children in need. Ed Block, a man of honor, courage, humility, and commitment. Maybe you believe it took courage for Mr. Vick to return to playing football. Maybe it is better he returns to football rather than a life of crime. He was given a second chance and this should have been reward enough! To be kind to him and give him a second chance is a good thing. But to honor him by giving him this prestigious award leaves many feeling wounded and betrayed by those who voted for him to receive it. It is probably a good thing that Mr. Block is not here to witness this betrayal.

For the first time in my life, I am embarrassed to be a Philadelphian. The Eagles organization has shown an appalling lack of judgement. One would hope that the enormous amounts of money spent of sports would allow our society to look at the participants as models for awards such as the Ed Block award. I can't fathom that the Eagles organization can believe that Michael Vick, in 2 short years, can become such a model citizen. Simply outraged.

When you hold up Michael Vick and tell everybody, "this is the best we have", sadly you are telling the world a whole lot about your organization.

Have these people completely lost it? What has this lowlife, best known for his extreme abuse of dogs, done to merit an award for prevention of CHILD ABUSE? The world is upside down. What little respect I had for sports figures is now gone.

What the F! The a-hole tortured dogs, and they give him a f'en courage award! Ugh! Hate him with a passion! they should have given the awards to the hundreds of people who spend there well earned money, time and passion in the rehabilation, rehousing & training of all those poor surviving pit bull dogs vick once owned! What's next? Give an honor award to the Unabomber!

This is ridiculous, for a couple of reasons. This award is to stop CHILD abuse. He didn't do anything there. He has been convicted and admitted to ANIMAL abuse. I think any kind of award is too soon. Maybe he has learned his lesson and seen the errors of his ways, but only time will tell that. I haven't heard of him helping animals recently or helping the HSUS lately. Was all that done at the time, just for good PR?

You have got to be kidding me that this MONSTER is awarded anything at all. I fully disagree with the HSUS - there is no redemption for such heinous acts of cruelty. People who can commit these acts are incapable of change. As one other post said, Vick is an arrogant SOB, the NFL should be ashamed of allowing him back in the league.

Awarding Michael Vick the Ed Block Courage Award certainly lowers the standards of that award for inspiration, courage and sportsmanship, but instead suggests the heinous cruelty to animals should be rewarded. Furthering the insult is that the proceeds of this award goes to promoting the awareness of child abuse by raising awareness of the epidemic is utterly absurd. A person who could have participated in such cruelty should hardly have his name listed along side of any cause for children nor should he be allowed near any child. Shame on anyone involved in this horrendous, sick decision. The sort of person that is involved with behavior like that of Michael Vick, has been shown to commit similar crimes towards humans, especially children and spousal abuse. Please rescind this award. To not do so is criminal and fosters an acceptance of animal abuse including torture and murder.

This is an insult to every other winner of this award. Only time will tell if Vick is truly reformed. As one of the bloggers here posted, he approves of the choice because Vick was "at rock bottom in his life and returned." Well that's just garbage. Many people hit rock bottom without committing longstanding, heinous abuse of helpless creatures. What makes anyone think Vick values human life if he is so cavalier about animal life? I am simply appalled. If Vick can stay out of trouble for a couple of years, then yeah, honor him as "courageous." But right now? It's just too soon.

These poor stupid Eagles just can't get it right. The Ed Block foundation works to end "the cycle of abuse" and its award recognizes those who act as community role models. And this team voted to award it to Michael Vick? If you meant it as a joke, its not funny.

I'm shocked. This award should be given to someone who actually did something good for kids or, for the matter, for any living beings. Michael Vick tortured and killed dogs for it's own pleasure! Don't you realized that your choice sucks.

i am truly appalled by the eagles organization! i wrote emails to mcnabb, the eagles and their sponsors stating my household would not be viewing any eagles games or purchasing any eagles items or supporting any eagles sponsors while vick was part of the team. i was looking forward to next season after vick has moved on. but now... it appears the whole organization is batty. what courage has vick actually demonstrated? maybe... maybe if he had visited and cared for the dogs he abused when he was on the west coast, maybe i could see him receiving this award, but come on!!! he is saying what he needs to say to make money again at the level he is accustomed. i don't know if i can go back to watching the eagles organization again. i was proud of being an eagles fan but no more. if i wanted my team to be classless, i would be a raiders fan.

Disgusting! Honoring Michael ConVick for such an award is truly wrong and should be an embarrasment to the Eagles organization. ConVick's comments say it all, he seems to think everything is about him. He is an arrogant SOB who in no way deserves to be glamorized or idolized. His winning the award does nothing but tarnish the award for the others nominated. Truly disgusting!

What a joke the Philadelphia organization is showing themselves to be to select Vick. Courage would be doing all he could to speak out against dog fighting, including putting football aside for the time to do it, not the bare minimum. Courage would be turning in the names and locations of others. Courage would be helping to truely make a difference. Vick is a pathetic individual that spent years hurting these innocent animals. A few words does not change this. Courage would be to decline award so that it would go to someone truely deserving. Even worse is the low morales shown by his teammates that selected him. Any of them that voted for him are embarrasements to the NFL. Too bad they could not find a real man to vote for.

The Eagles players have remade themselves from elite atheletes to common street thug. Honoring Vick is maybe the most misplaced glorification imaginable. Vick is an embarrasement and if he has any honor left should decline the award.

Ed Block Courage award celebrates a players commitment to inspiration. Michael Vick is no role model to kids anywhere. They want to improve the lives of children and end the cycles of abuse. That won't happen here. How has Michael suffered? Losing his dogs so he can't bet on them and make money? Came out of prison alive? No one has it easy in life, especially when you are young. Often, people make mistakes and need forgiven. When they know what they are doing and get "caught" they have to live with their choices. Each year this Ed Block award now goes to others knowing it is meaningless. Let's all shed a tear for Michael Vick and how he has suffered to overcome obstacles in his life. Arrest, conviction, prison and parole. It's outrageous that this "vote" was even accepted given the fact that most youth still try to find a hero to admire, especially in football. What a shame.

Absolutely sickening. "One foot in front of the other" - fine, I can grant you that, "second chances," whatever. But being held up as an exemplar of courage, and given an award by a foundation named after a humanitarian and dedicated to ending child abuse? Vick should have to do a hell of a lot more penance before being given such an award. He has shown neither courage, sportsmanship, nor humanitarianism. You realize that most child abuse laws in this country were crafted on animal abuse laws? Absolutely despicable on the part of the Eagles organization. He gets an award for trying to redress the massive wrongs he committed. Utterly, utterly unbelievable.

@Cooper - I think Andy Reid said it best that only Vick's teammates and coaches know best of what Vick has accomplished. I truly believe Reid has a great insight on people's character and I believe he would have seen right through Vick motives if they were selfish. What happened two years ago, was two years ago, it doesn't mean a man's heart can't change and make a huge step forward. I am proud of the entire Eagles organization to give this man a hand after he had fallen down. If all of humanity was so kind this world would be a much better place rather than kicking a person once they are down. My hat is especially off to the leadership from Reid and McNabb on this situation along with Mr. Tony Dungy whom I also respect greatly.

It is troublesome that the players have defined courage through the actions of Michael Vick. Michael's course of conduct through this year has not been the result of fortitude but rather that of necessity. This is a man who lost millions. His coming back to football was purely for the money, he needed to do the only thing he knew how. How quickly we forget the actions of Michael Vick two years ago. They were not the actions of a courageous man but rather that of a coward. Michael, the other players and the Eagles as a whole should take a long look in the mirror and ask what have we done?

my grandmother used to say put one foot in front of the other and continue to walk no matter what has happened...we all make mistakes but it is how we deal with those mistakes after a second chance is given...you seem to be doing a great job...good luck to you and may God continue to bless you and your family and the eagles organization for doing what other organizations did't have the guts to do...happy holidays
