V.P. Of NFL Officiating: Spot On Sneak Should Have Moved

November 11, 2009 | Last Updated: 11/11/09 10:38 PM ET | Comments (9)

Mike Pereira, the Vice President of NFL Officiating, spoke to NFL Network's Rich Eisen on Wednesday night and the two discussed the placement of the ball after Donovan McNabb's sneak in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

On a fourth-and-1 from the Dallas 45-yard line with 11:01 remaining in the game, McNabb lined up under center, took the snap and went over right guard Nick Cole. The referees spotted the ball short of the first-down marker. Head coach Andy Reid challenged the call. The referees deemed that the original spot was correct after looking at the replay and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs. In addition, the Eagles lost their final timeout.

After watching the tape, Pereira said that he would have made a different decision.

"I think I'd move it," Pereira said. "There was a camera angle that showed exactly where the ball was when McNabb's elbow hit the ground. The Eagles logo at midfield provided a reference point. The spot where the ball was when McNabb's elbow touched the ground did not match the placement of the ball by the referees."

However, Pereira does not necessarily believe that the spot where it should have been moved to would have earned the first down.

"I don't know that it becomes a first down ... I still think there was enough to move it up a few inches. Whether or not it becomes a first down, that becomes a tricky question because you're talking about moving it inches," Pereira said. "If you didn't have that Eagle (logo) there, I don't think you have any vantage point to move it at all."

Over the last few years the nfl officiating has been horrbile especially last year, some refs could be paid off or they might just be mentally retarded and to old to see. I mean my grandpa is the same age as alot these refs and he cant see jack. The nfl needs to hire some younger people who can actually somewhat run down field to still b able to c the play and actually have vision, check out the ball spots when someone gets stop before the goal line on long plays this season refs never know were there down so they use the 5 yard line. Honeslty the NFL should investigate all refs over 50's eyes n i bet they would fire most of em for being completely blind.

Complete BS, the refs were clearly uneducated in every category..how many times did they mess up a call or point a wrong way for possession or miss a players correct number, or stutter and become hesitant when it came down to making a call..inconsistency and terrible officiating -all-around- because it's a team effort out there that includes all the refs and their (bogus, non-evident) calls..worst way to lose is when not only your team gives the game away, but when the refs gift-wrap it for you. Especially to the cowgirls

This should get the Team fire up and don't leave anything for the Officials on the field any more. Win the next games by a wide margin, it is payback time. Go Eagles!!

unbelievable. this cost us the game as did the false start call and the two dope plays by fokou. it amazes me it takes the vp of officiating to come out and say this for people to realize what happened. we could have played better but i swear after the game all the commentators didnt say a thing about bogus calls. you would think the cowboys played great when in reality they got lucky and we gave them the game. games like this make me sick

I believe that if the officials would have moved the ball to where it should have been placed, the Eagles would have had the first down. Plus they would have still had one more time out. Even the V.P. of Officiating said the refs made a bad decision. But obviously the refs in that game are on Jerry Jones' payroll. The NFL should investigate this. This cost us the football game. Also, that bogus false start that was called on us should really have been a neutral zone infraction by the defense. Those two calls gave the cowgirls the ball and they ended up scoring 10 points as a result of this. Those refs should not be allowed to ref a playoff game this year as a penalty.

what a joke. the refs sucked for four quarters last sunday. not that we should've been in that position in the first place, but i hope the girls know they got away with one.
