Protection The Difference For McNabb

November 9, 2009 | Last Updated: 11/9/09 7:16 PM ET | Comments (0)

For the most part, quarterback Donovan McNabb has been able to hold his own under pressure this season.

McNabb entered Sunday night's game ranked 10th among starting quarterbacks against the blitz. According to Stats Inc., McNabb was 16-of-31 for 272 yards with a touchdown and a 92.4 QB rating this season when blitzed.

On Sunday, however, the Cowboys pressured McNabb early and often in a 20-16 loss for the Eagles. McNabb was sacked four times and had his first multi-interception regular season game since the infamous Baltimore game last season. According to ESPN.com, McNabb was just 3-of-8 for 49 yards with the two interceptions against the Dallas blitz for a 19.3 QB rating.

Take away those numbers and he was 13-of-22 for 178 yards with his lone touchdown pass of the night to tight end Brent Celek for a 100.2 QB rating.

Night and day.

"I think as an offense obviously we will discuss a lot of things this week that we want to iron out," McNabb said after the game. "We're playing against a (Chargers) team that is coming of a big win against the Giants and they pretty much don't care what happened (Sunday night). We have to have short-term memory and just move on and be able to erase what happened (Sunday night) and hope it turns to something positive next week."

A week earlier, McNabb had tremendous protection and completed 17-of-23 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns for a 146.7 QB rating in a 40-17 whipping of the Giants.

Despite being forced into the mistakes by the Cowboys' aggressive approach, McNabb knows that the Eagles had opportunities to come out ahead. There was one play in particular that stuck in his craw. On a third-and-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the game, McNabb was flushed out of the pocket and decided to take off. However, just as McNabb started to get going, he was tripped up from behind by linebacker Victor Butler.

"The telltale of that game was the shoestring tackle. All I saw was green grass and the defender just did a great job of peeling off and just grabbing my foot when I thought I was going to pick up some big yards and that's kind of how the game went," McNabb said. "It was just that close from it really being on our side of things."

The Eagles don't have long to worry about what went wrong against Dallas. The San Diego Chargers are on the horizon and they've won three straight games.
