If It's Kolb, He Will Be A Better QB On Sunday

Everything fits just right for Kevin Kolb this week. He knows the tempo of practice. He has been in the position before of taking all of the practice reps and executing the game plan. Meetings have just a touch more purpose as he prepares to be the starter for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Even sitting in the auditorium in front of the media is old hat for Kolb in his second week of assuming the role of the Eagles' starting quarterback.

"It feels good," says Kolb of the routine. "I'm used to it now. I think that makes a difference."

Donovan McNabb hasn't been ruled out to this point, and the Eagles are certainly going to keep the option of McNabb playing very much available. But they also know that McNabb hasn't practiced in two weeks and that, while his fractured rib is improving and he can at least throw the football, McNabb could still be a ways away from taking snaps in a real game.

So Kolb, until further notice, is the guy. He seems to have grown so much in such a short time. One week ago, curious onlookers watched practice to see how Kolb responded, to take notice of his demeanor and the way he responded to the daily pressure of the job. That isn't the case any longer. Kolb puts on a show at practice, throwing strikes to his receivers, running the huddle with authority and showing a strong command of the offense.

While the status of Michael Vick is the big story of the week -- yes, he is going to play and no, there is no defined role yet -- Kolb's possible second consecutive start is of utmost importance. The Chiefs play a physical 3-4 defense, nothing fancy. Kansas City is tough, with a good secondary. The Chiefs pushed Baltimore to the limit two weeks ago and then dominated the Raiders' offense last week.

If it's Kolb, do the Eagles throw the football as much as they did on Sunday when Kolb threw for 391 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions? Do they use the Wild Eagle as much as they did against the Saints? With Vick eligible to play, do they use it more?

Nobody is talking, of course. The Eagles have their plan of attack in place for this game. They showed great confidence in Kolb on Sunday and should he be the guy against Kansas City, the coaches know more about the young man they'll have calling the shots. Kolb did a lot of good things on Sunday, and the Eagles know that. He threw for 391 yards and the two scores. He ran a good one-minute drive at the end of the first half. There were no late huddles. Kolb understood what he saw from the New Orleans defense. His pocket presence was strong and Kolb's decision making was sound, as was his ball security in the pocket.

And, yes, there were plays Kolb would like to have back. He threw those three interceptions, one a nothing toss away on the final play of the game, but two others that were very costly. Early in the second half Kolb went to a three-step drop and tried to get the ball out to Brent Celek on an out route. The Saints read the play and linebacker Scott Shanle stepped in front of the throw and made an interception that helped turn the game around.

"I made a mistake there," said Kolb. "There were a few of them during the game that I learned from. That is part of it. I wasn't happy because I didn't play well enough for us to win the game. We knew we couldn't make those kinds of mistakes against a team like that and I went out and made mistakes.

"At the same time, I have to learn from my mistakes. I can't change what happened, but I can make sure I don't do the same thing again."

The jury is still out on Kolb. One game does not a fair sample make. He did more good things in the game, but the bad news is that the Eagles lost and Kolb was the quarterback and, well, that's how it works. The guys under center get too much credit and they also get too much blame. Fact is, there is a group of you out there who aren't sold yet on Kolb, the team's first draft pick in 2007.

The Eagles are sold. They see a quarterback with the brains and the physical skills and the leadership qualities to be something special. Kolb just hasn't had a chance to show what he can do playing behind McNabb, who is, obviously, one of the league's best quarterbacks. What this all means, adding in Vick to boot, is going to bear watching for the rest of this season and next year as well, but for now Kolb is taking it day to day and soaking in the experience.

Some day, somewhere, Kolb is going to be a starting quarterback. And he is going to be a good one who has accuracy and touch and a winner's mentality and mobility and all of the skills you need to see.

"I'm not thinking like that," he said. "I know my situation here and I have to be ready when I get the call," said Kolb.

The call came last week and it is in line to happen again on Sunday. If that happens, Kolb has only to trace the steps he made last week. He has created the path to the starting lineup and he knows way it is golng to be. If there is pressure, Kolb isn't feeling it. Or, at least, he isn't allowing anyone else to see it. He is cool as could be should Reid and Mornhinweg give him the nod for a second straight week.

All it all up and Kolb should be a better quarterback than he was last week. Much better. It is something to look forward to, something that may not be the big story but one that is the most important story to monitor through Sunday afternoon.

What I'm hearing from the locker room is that they are not happy about Kolb. Kolb had horrible coverage last week. He is a second stringer his whole career, no doubt about it. He has no coverage technique, speed and he couldn't tackle a kicker if he ran into one. Man those 2 Colston TD's he gave up were killers. Then he lets Evans get by him for an 11 yrd TD then Bell for a 7 yd TD, then Bush for a 19 yd TD. His bad play cost them field position and 2 FG's as well. Almost forgot that TD he gave up on offense. Give it up Reed! He can't play both sides of the ball. Bench this guy! He's a bum.

Obamaeagle- u r exactly right! I couldn't have said it better myself! kolb is a nice guy and do hope he does well...however, he sucks for several of the reasons that many people have mentioned. And to all the people that say, "the front office knows more than you" blah blah blah, NO THEY DONT! This situation is just like Obamaeagle explained it. Andy's pet project

Playing Kolb could be a gamble on a couple of levels. If the opinion of the locker room is that K. Kolb is the 3rd choice of three possible QB options--Reid is messing with a lot of heads on th team. No one wants to play on an offense with the 3rd string guy in a regular season game..when 1 and 2 are sitting. Is Andy playing head-games with his offense? Is he sending the message that "this game doesn't matter, its only training for Kolb"? Is this the message that was sent to the locker room and is it why the team fell flat on its face against the Saints? And the wildcat....don't players have incentives in their contracts for specific performance goals--reach those goals--earn bonus compensation. Seems to me like the wildcat might actually hurt the statistics of a few offensive players--not exactly a morale lift. My concern here is what message Andy is sending to the locker room. At best, it seems like mixed signals to me.

I dont expect much of anything from Kolb. To play Kolb ahead of two probowlers makes no sense in the ordinary world. But, in Andys egotistical world it makes perfect sense. Andy will always be battling for credit for some of the teams success. He must not let McNabb beat him. But its glaringly evident that this team is not so pretty without McNabb or a McNabb calibur QB at the helm. This is Andys darling. His reach in the draft. His moment of brilliance. Now he wants his chance to prove it. Remember anyone can play in andys system. What a joke.

TallEagle boy- U asked how Kolb sucked...the first interception he threw killed us and it was thrown at the level of a high school QB-there was nothing obstructing he view to see the ONE defender standing between him and the receiver. He is afraid to run and pick up yards when nobody is open. A few times he had plenty of room to run it but instead threw it away. If he gets sacked there is a 50-50 chance he will lose the ball. As for his 391 yards, most were in garbage time with game over and the Saints in a prevent defense. Aside from his big strike to DJax, he didn't have many long throws. We will beat the Chiefs but don't buy into this "Kolb is the future" crap. He is the future IF someone gets injured. This has nothing to do with our poruous defense.

Spuddy... I disagree with you. In my opinion, Kansas City's "D" is a joke. They have absolutely no pass rush. I will admit, Kolb played surprisingly well against a bad "D" last week. However, our ST and focus were worse than New Orleans "D". I think Kolb will do well. But lets be honest, If he fails against this "D" he is done. Kolb is not my main worry, Westbrook does not look explosive. I am going to focus more on Westbrook this week.

Bri didnt you get enough kudos from your #1 fan "slurpean" lol but seriously just to reiterate my shot in the dark. Westbrook 150+ total yards 2+ tds. We need to get a lead and run the ball effectively. Yes we will use mccoy and hopefully weaver more than once, but I think westbrook needs to have a big game for us to win. WR core is hurting and although avant and celek will have solid games, maclin might get his first start or atleast more playing time with curtis and djax banged up.. Is he ready? Not sure, but time will tell..

3D) That is one of my concerns. I think they may try to take those duties away from DJack if he starts with this injury, but will put him back in it if Maclin messes up (too much).

One thing that tempers any enthusiasm I might hold for Vick as the Wildcat Eagle Weapon is that, in his previous incarnation, the number of times he squeaked by a tackle, burst through a rapidly-closing hole, or accelerated out of a collapsing pocket by the absolute SKIN OF HIS TEETH, then made something happen became too numerous to count. Always it was that half-step of extra speed and quickness he possessed that gave him a highlight play. Without it, he would have been sacked, tackled, dropped for a loss--you name it. Nobody can convince me to believe that the highest gear is in his repertoire anymore. But it certainly isn't true that NFL defenses are getting any less quick. So, that leaves you with his QB skills almost exclusively, his pocket abilities, his accuracy, his field generalship.I have no reason to believe in that facet of his game. Vick has no benefit of my doubt, just my doubt. It takes more than throwing the jersey on to make me feel that he is An Eagle.

This is not KK's team...yet. AR has him #2 on the depth chart. Can you imagine being KK...he has #5 ahead of him...Vick and Garica behind him? That is a lot to deal with for a young QB. If they sign 'Trot' who do we cut? What does this say about Leman on the PS...just not ready at this point in time?

i hope i'm wrong and kolb turns out to be a great qb. more importantly, if he turns out to be a bust, i hope we figure it out before we end up without a viable alternative (not this year, but 2010 or 2011)

Thanks for the math lesson. Most of those came after the game was decided. Man if Kolb ever shoots himself in the leg he wont have any trouble rounding up a defense team. K, I'm done trashing Kolb but he's a career backup and he should know his damn role.
