Kolb: Eager For Another Opportunity

September 20, 2009 | Last Updated: 9/20/09 7:06 PM ET | Comments (31)

With all eyes on Kevin Kolb as he made his first career start, the third-year quarterback helped the Eagles offense get off to an unbelievable start. The ending, however, was just as unbelievable.

On the fourth play of the Eagles' opening drive, Kolb hit DeSean Jackson in perfect stride over the middle for a 71-yard touchdown. It was Kolb's first career touchdown pass and it tied the game at 7-7.

"I was excited to get that because we needed the crowd on our side and they were on our side," Kolb said. "We needed that energy. We had to answer at that point because we knew (Drew) Brees and the Saints - we didn't want them to get the big lead on us like they ended up doing."

The problem? The Eagles were playing catch-up the entire game and were eventually outlasted by the Saints 48-22. Kolb finished 31-for-51 for 391 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

"It's frustrating because there were some good things out there. I just hate that I kill myself and kill the team with those turnovers," Kolb said. "As a quarterback, you can't allow yourself to do that. It puts us in the hole. It put us in the hole at the top of the third (quarter) and we couldn't recover."

After engineering a two-minute drive at the end of the first half that ended with a David Akers field goal, the Eagles trailed just 17-13 at halftime. The Eagles were supposed to get the ball to start the second half, but Ellis Hobbs fumbled the kickoff return and the Saints capitalized with a touchdown to take a 24-13 lead. The Eagles finally got the ball and Kolb looked for DeSean Jackson on a quick pass along the sideline and it was picked off by linebacker Scott Shanle. The Saints scored again to take a 31-13 lead.

"We had been throwing that route in the two-minute drill leading up to the half and they trust me if that guy gets wide, to just check it back underneath," Kolb said. "And I really thought I could get it outside of him and we had been doing it previous to that point and he just took off to the flats."

All three of Kolb's picks came in the second half and one of them was returned 97 yards for a touchdown by Darren Sharper.  Kolb was quick to realize that two of the interceptions - the final one came on a Hail Mary at the end of the game - were bad throws.

"I saw it clear as day they were bad throws," Kolb said. "I left them inside and you can't do that on out breaking routes, first page of the quarterback book. It just upsets me that I make those errors."

But Kolb did enough to earn another start if Donovan McNabb can't play next week against the Chiefs because of his rib injury, according to head coach Andy Reid. Kolb's teammates would agree that he deserves another chance.

"To be honest, I thought Kevin did a pretty good job in there,"" said fullback Leonard Weaver. ""I know some things happened with the ball and turnovers, OK those things happen, but I thought he did a great job. He looked like he was in command. He was consistent. He read the defenses well. I thought he did a pretty good job of managing the game."

Anyone who is ragging on Kolb is an idiot. Kolb did alot and showed potential. Lets talk about continuous Eagles offensive problems and personal decisions.(drafting) Let's talk Kolbs performance in relation to the Eagles recent history. 1) Lack of a real running game. Sure Westbrrok can break one , but there are times where the Eagles run game stalls completely. This is an issue. Last year, during the Bears loss, on four downs from the one, nothing. Last year in the Giants one game nothing in short yardage clutch plays. The Kolb to Ed Reed interception last year after Kolb drove them to the two, no attempt to run because the Eagles Short yardage running game STINKS. We knew this after the Super Bowl loss and five years later we draft a Westbrook prototype to replace West eventually. In the meantime the birds have drafted gnats like Moats. We passed on Lendale White, Beanie Wells, and other big backs that can pound. Yesterdays Sharper TD does not happen with a real running game.

Realtearz just cause you played QB in Middle Scholl doesnr mean you know that position. First off he wasnt a 1st round draft pick. The line didnt play that well for him. Our special Teams sucked. Over all the team did poorly. As far as cutting Maclin after 2 regular season games well thats pretty satupid for you to say that and saying that the Saints offense is ok you are a real idiot. DB is probably the top QB in the league right now. He puts up huge numbers. You know nothing about football. Go back to your bag of chips sit on the couch and watch the game. Maybe 1 day you will understand the game and realize why you never got to be a QB in highschool.

Kolb has been in the league 3 years and has'nt produced. He was a 1st round draft pick??????what the ####? He is in charge of the offense. granted the defense could have played better..period. but they can only take so many 3 and outs....case in point. carolina's offense is better than the saints. but a well coordinated defense destroyed that!!!! our defense.... we need to cut our losses with this dude and look deeper in the draft for the future of this team. They're are of plenty of people out there... We may also need to cut our loses with Maclin!! he has'nt been right since that hit in the jaguars preseason GAME.I have doubts he can play at this level. We needed a breakaway receiver who can go with Mcnabb and Desean Jackson. Why do we keep missing this?

What up Eagles!!! First, I think Kolb did better than I thought he would or could and I'm his biggest critic. Being in the league for 3 seasons I would've expected more. I use to be a quarterback and I know that responsibility for driving the team falls on him...period. The quarterback controls the tempo of the game. His inability due to lack of experience or fear, prevented him from doing that. The fact is the Saints have an ok offense(4 scores came from our side of the field after errors) but they have a less than mediocre defense. Their secondary is slow and suspect while the line did'nt penetrate as they should have against a first time starter. So, in that retrospect Kolb looked ok. Kc's defense is worse than the saints. So he should fair well.I don't see him as the future of this team he does not have true Eagle grit.

Vick needs a chance next week if Mac isnt ready to roll. At least with Vick, safties and LB's will have to stay at home to compensate for the speed and running ability. Don't just use him in the wildcat. We can pull off a great running attack and with all that speed on the field, we'll have too many options for big gains. Vick has twice the arm as 3-and-out Kolb, and he keeps the defensive backfield honest.

Kolb is still a bum. I can't believe AR is considering starting this guy again. That 71 yard TD was ALL Desean, Koy Detmer could have made that pass. Hell Brian Westbrook could have landed that. Kolb missed little 5-10 yard dump-offs that could have moved the sticks and kept the offense on the field. One behind Desean that he could have taken to the house, one to BWest that could have went for 30 plus. He hit BWest in the calf. On a little 10 yarder. He wasn't poised, wasn't cool. He stayed in the pocket, big deal. When he threw it he was off big time. Trade this loser, he isn't the answer. Now he is anxious for another chance? Three years it's been. How long does it take to get your **** together?

I’m still not sold on this guy it was not that great of a game for him because when you watch Kolb play you don’t really see him taking command of the offence. He looks unsure a lot of times and all those passing yard he had where meaningless passing yard because they did not translate into points. A 400 yard passing game sounds like at least a 4-5 touchdown day for a quarterback but this kid can’t score. Its simple you cannot rely on him to win games for you because his style of play is manage a game at best but we don’t have a solid defense and special team and the coach to do that with. I much rather have Jeff, Vick in the game besides that kid because at least I know what I’m getting a somewhat of a winner this kid is not a winner. God I hope McNabb gets back soon because I don’t know why Reid is in love with Kolb.

WOW kolb did much better then i ever thought he would have done ... yeah he made some bad decisions but he did ok for his first start .. Im seeing now why reid brought this kid into the nest ... he has potential he made the normal mistakes young QB's make .. i honestly wanted his head on a platter before this game ... Kolb has gained some respect from myself and others after this performance .. Let him play next week , i think K.C is a far easier team to play then N.orleans ... we will be seeing new orleans in the playoffs they look pretty damn good .. but next time its gonna be a different outcome they got us once ..."ONCE" ... they wont have the same ease next time around ... the defense def looked lost this week .. and the blitz was non existant and breezy boy picked us apart ... bottom line ... and maybe next week we can hold onto the ball .. yet i know we are gonna lose a few games im glad it was to a good team ... and not a team we def should have beaten ...

Another example to consider: Matt Cassel. In his first start--after sitting on the bench for three years--Cassel threw for 165 yards, no TDs, no INTs. His team won because they held the Jets to 10 points. The next week, his second start, 131 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, and the Pats got destroyed by the Dolphins running the Wildcat, 38-13. With Cassel in charge, the Pats went on to win 11 games and only missed the Playoffs on a tie-breaker. in Kolb, we've got a guy who clearly fits into Reid's system--nearly 400 yards throwing, 5 pass plays of over 20 yards. Give him some time.

Week 7 - you people will see and change your tone and say us asssesss who want Garcia in were right ...(granted Kolb does need time to develop and get out there; but we all know our assinine coaches will play Vick over Kolb and release Garcia week 4-6 - that is the main issue I have here; Vick will NOT get us W's!), will prove to be right here, remember this post on Week 7 if our boy McNabb is still out or hurting :( (I am a gambling man, anyone up for a bet?)

If I may - I would have kept the QB situation as is, we didn't and DON't NEED VICK! Now the season is lost if our #5 can't come back! Why I say the season is lost because our assinine coaches won't play a veteran QB WHO TOOK US TO THE PLAYOFF - PLAY GARCIA - PLAY GARCIA!!!! - If we let Garcia go after week 3 to play ass'hole Vick, then I have to agree FIRE Reid!!!

I'm seeing negative posts from all the people who say we should have kept Feeley. Think about this: Feeley used to play exactly the same way. He'd throw for a ton of yards and make just enough mistakes to keep us from winning. But there's a difference: Feeley was a long-term veteran with a dozen starts under his belt, and this was Kolb's first start. If you ask me, Kolb acquitted himself better than Eli Manning did in any game in his first two season. Kolb's not the reason we lost this game.

Went to my 1st Eagle game yesterday and i must say that alot of my fellow Eagle fans need to get a FN life. Complaining about every call that the offense ran, complaining about the Refs, Saying Reid needs fired, saying Kolb sucks put Garcia in. SHUT UP. I have come to the conclusion that alot of you know nothing about football and that alot of you are front runners. The defense, special teams played horrible. The offense was OK. Im not a Kolb fan but he played good enough to get another start. He almost thre for 400 yards in his first start. Not bad. He just has to cut down on the INT. Please fellow EAGLE fans get your heads out of your aassss and PLEASE think before you speak.

Get use to it folks. This loss was not about Kolb. Overall, he did okay for his first start. He actually looked pretty good running the 2 minute drill at the end of the 1st half. This loss was about a defense that was totally outsmarted by a much better offensive minded head coach. This will not be the last game that this defense looks weak. Special teams were horrible. Time for a new punter. Garcia??? The morons calling for Garcia crack me up. Then again, clueless people make these boards hilarious.

I hope Kolb starts again next week. Rest McNabb until after the bye. Rather have him healthy for 13 games then risk it against KC. Kolb just needs to be a little more conservative at times and avoid the INTs. He'll be better next week. Hopefully the defense will decide to play all out next week too... Vick isn't ready to run the offense as many fans seem to forget, just use him for certain plays...

There is a reason the Eagles signed Vick, Mcnabb is hurt, so lets see if Vick still has what it takes to lead this team. Kolb had his chance and he blew it. How many chances can you get when you can easily dig a hole you can't get out of.

Every chance this man has had to play, there is a pattern....it's called int's for those of you who don't know....If that play in Carolina ended #5's career....what are you gonna say....let Kolb lose 3 or 4 games, so he can get enough time at the reigns, then we'll win it all.......LMFAO!!!!!!.....THIS MAN IS NOT THE FUTURE EAGLES QB!!!!!....

I would also say that Kolb made some great throws where he had to stay in the pocket, plant his feet and deliver some great passes while taking hard hits.Have you ever seen a quarterback see a defensive player coming to hit them and as they throw it they turn away because they don't want to take a big hit?I seen it and Kevin Kolb did not do that today!
