Daisher Undaunted Despite ST's Bad Day

September 20, 2009 | Last Updated: 9/21/09 12:11 AM ET | Comments (4)

What a difference a week can make.

After an explosive performance that included a DeSean Jackson punt return, the Eagles' special teams committed five of the team's seven penalties, and fumbled away the opening kickoff of the second half of the Eagles' 48-22 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

"We had a tough day," said special teams coordinator Ted Daisher. "We have to play a lot better than that."

Trailing by only four points at the half, the Eagles were poised to get their offense onto the field until Ellis Hobbs fumbled the kickoff return and the Saints recovered the ball. Drew Brees would throw an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Saints a 24-13 lead three plays later and the Saints never looked back.

"You never want to give the opponent a chance for an extra possession," said Daisher. "I thought we had a chance for a good return, a guy got Ellis (Hobbs) from the side and the ball came out.

"It didn't help the cause obviously. It gave them some momentum. Any big play on special teams is momentum wise, and I think that gave them some momentum that obviously hurt our cause."

Daisher also discussed the performance of punter Sav Rocca, who had a couple punts of less than 40 yards.

"Sav had a tough day but he's our guy," Daisher said. "We believe in him and he's going to do a good job next week."

Will Daisher change anything this week in light of the performance of his special teams unit?

"Never," he said. "You never change, you never blink, you never think twice. We've been pretty good in special teams the last few years in Cleveland (where Daisher coached), top five in the league.

"I'm not going to change anything, we're just going to work and get better."

The Special Teams was terrible today. Tons of penalties and a turnover. Ted Daisher better get to work cleaning things up. I don't like having a cornerback as a returner either. We saw what happened in the Bills game with Leodis McKelvin. I was worried about Hobbs also putting the ball on the ground. Let a surehanded offensive player return the ball that's used to carrying it. Leshon McCoy and Jeremy Maclin are two guys that should be considered. Forget about big plays, that's the offenses job, just protect the ball.

I agree with you Mort. I havent like Hobbs back there one bit. He looks lacksadazicle(w/e) out there like he could care less. Getting to the ball and once he catches it he looks very slow. It takes him to long from when he catches the ball until he takes off and I think he's capable of being faster he just lacks the heart for it. The Patriots do not trade away guys unless there is a reason. Also I think Daisher has no control over his unit and lacks there respect. With Hobbs going half speed and all the penalties I don't know how not to think that. Also he needs to take responsibility for his units play and stop bring up what he did in Cleveland. This is not Cleveland and it doesn't matter what you did there your in philly now. The only good play so far was the Jackson punt return and Daisher had nothing to do with that. It was all Desean and without him this unit would be garbage. Atleast thats what it seems like through the 1st 6 games of the year.

Not sure I'm a fan of Hobbs returning abilites. Can anyone talk me into it? Or maybe suggest another player you think might better handle KO returns?
