Vick On Active Roster; Baskett Released

September 15, 2009 | Last Updated: 9/15/09 2:51 PM ET | Comments (58)

The Eagles on Tuesday afternoon removed quarterback Michael Vick from the Exempt List and added him to their 53-man roster and released wide receiver Hank Baskett.

Vick is eligible to practice when the team resumes its work at the NovaCare Complex on Wednesday. He is not eligible to play in a game until Week 3, when the Eagles play the Kansas City Chiefs at Lincoln Financial Field.

Clearly, the Eagles want to get Vick back on the practice field to get him ready to play in some capacity as quickly as possible. Vick played in the team's final two preseason games, both as a "Wildcat" player lining up both at quarterback and at receiver and in the second half of the game against the Jets as a quarterback.

Baskett joined the Eagles as a rookie free agent in 2006 after a fine career at New Mexico. He was originally signed as a non-drafted rookie by the Vikings, who then traded him to the Eagles for wide receiver Billy McMullen. In his time as an Eagle, Baskett caught 72 passes for 1,052 yards and 6 touchdowns.

He was due to become a restricted free agent in this past off-season, but the Eagles signed him to a one-year tender worth $1.545 million. Had another team signed Baskett, the Eagles would have received a second-round draft pick as compensation.

Instead, Baskett signed and looked forward to a significant role in the offense. However, the Eagles drafted Jeremy Maclin in the first round of April's draft and then added Brandon Gibson in the sixth round. Both players had strong performances in the spring and summer and the Eagles carried seven wide receivers on their 53-man roster through the first week of the season.

pcjoeyd, I'm not saying release the guy, I'm just bring it up since we are talking about WRs. Right now Stats don't mean anything he has to show it in the field and so far he hasn't, hell I have seen better potential on the sixth-round draft pick, Brandon Gibson, then him.

C'mon, you know they cut Baskett because the players wives were threatened by the hotness of Kendra. Seriously though, they coulda cut some other deadwood. I hope he gets picked up by some team like AJ did. Just not in our division.

I think they cut Baskett instead of Brown because Jackson, Maclin and Curtis are vertical speed receivers and so the style of receiver that Baskett is (a vertical threat), was more expendable. Brown, when he plays (which will be more now) is more of an underneath route runner like Avant.

lissette_n_tavo, Maclin is going to be a stud. You don't release a guy that was drafted high in the 1st round, UNLESS he had a HORRIBLE training camp (which he certainly did not). It just doesn't happen!

The Eagles should got rid of Reggie Brown, Kevin Kolb and Shawn Andrews before Hank Basket. Brown and Kolb are easy decisions. Brown doesn't have it any more and Kolb never will. Andrews is too injured and should find other work.

Eagles069, you are right on two accounts. You don't get it, and you are baffled. I hate to start in on you like that, but 4th and 20? I can only assume that you mean 4th and 26 in the playoff game against the packers in 2004. Not only was it 4th and 26, but Reggie Brown was not the receiver. The receiver was Freddie Mitchell. It's hard to see how a fan could forget the details of that one. As for Baskett, he is a great situational receiver and that's why the Eagles had 7 receivers on the roster to begin with. I'm sure this wasn't an easy decision. But when you have to choose between a situational receiver and a starting caliber receiver who would start if Curtis or Jackson got hurt, you choose that latter. Brown was hurt last year, but he runs great routes and has good hands. I like Baskett a lot, but he was slower out of his cuts and never really took advantage of his tremendous height (see: fade pattern). I just wish we could have received something for him.

Very upset with this decision. Although Im excited to have Vick on the roster, I dont think we should have gotten rid of Hank. He was solid than some of the 6 receivers we still have. But I suppose the sacrifice is needed to make room for Mr. Garcia.

I dont get it .... reggie brown hasnt done a damn thing ... and yet he flies just below the radar and he really hasnt done very much . 4th and 20 was a long time ago .. Hank Baskett was a keeper in my eyes and reggie should have been released or traded ... i dont understand why they keep this guy ... im baffled

"I don't know about you guys but I haven't seen NOTHING SPECIAL about Maclin, NOTHING" How about 4.3 speed and good hands and good moves? Maclin will make big plays, he was the second highest rated receiver in the draft by most experts. Give him some time and he'll prove it when he sees the field.

Abiamiri is NOT primarily playing tackle. He's the Started left Defensive End, thanks for coming out though butch.arrington. They can't release Dixon because they only have 3 other defensive tackles and that's a position where depth is very important. Dixon will come in handy in run situations and in the red zone especially if Bunkley ever gets hurt.

Okay I'm a big Hank supporter but don't diss Maclin just because he had some jitters in his first NFL action. Maclin could be a special receiver, he has a lot of talent.

Releasing Baskett was pretty stupid (Reggie Brown is a more polished receiver than Baskett.) Kevin Curtis is probably NEVER going to be the receiver he was two years ago again. The Sports hernia injury looks like it's taking him down the same road as LJ Smith and they need to just release the guy and get it over with. The Eagles should also release the tackle Dixon that they added since Abiamiri is primarily playing tackle now and if they could have kept Baskett or resign the guy and bring up Ammendola the 53 number is met and they would be in much better shape. When they release Kolb after week 3 if they want a tackle they should still be able to get Klecko.

What the F***K, What are they thinking? Releasing Baskett? Hank was our big WR and I don't know about you guys but I haven't seen NOTHING SPECIAL about Maclin, NOTHING not even as a punt returner!! and I was watching the hole pre season (COM ON MAN) Now they let go of Basket? I just hope non of our ribels will picking up, but I whish him the best!! Good Luck!!! God help us this season!!

I agree that we should release brown because he has done NOTHING for us... Maclin, curtis and jacksonn will be our main guys... I see lots of potential in Brandon Gibson, he had an EXCELLENT pre-season...

I really don't see Reggie Brown playing special teams and blocking and doing all the little things as well as Hank did. Brown has more talent, but doesn't have half the heart Hank has. I think our tallest receiver is now 6'1" I don't like our size either. Baskett was never amazing at bringing down jump balls in the endzone but he was the best we had.

if we drop brown we stand to take a big cap penalty i believe, so thats why baskett got the can unfortunately. i had high hopes for brown, but i dunno what happened to him...
