So much for waiting around to see when
Shawn Andrews
is healthy enough to play. The Eagles placed Andrews on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season. It also likely raises question marks about Andrews and his future in the game.
It was reported that Andrews received a report from back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins late in the summer that said Andrews had no structural damage in his back, but Andrews was unable to overcome back pain to get on the field in the days leading up to the opening game of the regular season in Carolina. Andrews missed the entire training camp and the preseason after tweaking his surgically-repaired back during the conditioning tests upon reporting to Lehigh University and didn't start practicing again until just before the final preseason game against the Jets.
He appeared, as of a week ago, ready to play right tackle against Carolina. But Andrews missed practice on the Thursday before the game and then was ruled out for the game on Friday. Clearly, head coach Andy Reid felt the team couldn't wait any longer for Andrews to get healthy and placed him on IR on Tuesday morning.
The Eagles needed to make room on the roster for newly-signed quarterback Jeff Garcia and Andrews was the one who went -- to IR.
"It's disappointing to lose any player for the entire season, but we have full confidence in the other linemen we have on this roster to help this team succeed," said Reid in a statement. "We wish Shawn all the best as he recovers and rehabilitates from this injury."
Now you wonder when and if and how Andrews fits into the long-term picture here. He played just two games in 2008 before suffering a back injury in the first half of the game against Dallas. The Eagles waited all season to see if Andrews could recover in time for the playoffs, but the patience was not rewarded and Andrews ultimately had surgery.
Now, with injuries dotting the early-season roster and with a glut of decisions to be made, the Eagles decided to put Andrews on the shelf rather than cut from the current roster.
Winston Justice started at right tackle on Sunday and is now, clearly, the starting right tackle for this football team.

at least shawn can get read for the wing bowl with his spare time, this fat useless clown is a disgrace to pro football and to all linemen. A lineman's job is to be blue collar, understated,, hard working, shawn is the opposite, he is a self-promoter, feminine, and emotional like a child.

yeah it sucks that he is hurt and that the injury is an ongoing thing. but there is a reason that they don't have handicapped ramps on the football field, and why muhammed ali doens't box anymore. andy reid usually cuts veterans beginning to backslide, i wouldn't be surprised if (finacials aside) he wasn't on the team next year.

ANDREWS has a muscle problem in his lower back that will never be right ... I myself have the same problem and im 6ft5 325 and played def tackle .. its the worst type of back problem because it lingers around and it doesnt take much to tweak it ... and when it acts up it is very painful and can take a week to subside .. and you just cant play pro ball with it period when its acting up... and it can come and go on a month to month basis ... he may feel great for 2 weeks and then boom done for 2 weeks ... so he may be broken goods ... i feel for the guy i know first hand how bad it can get ... thank god we have depth at OL we will be ok or even great .. im more worried about QB thank god garcia is back ... GO BIRDS !!!!!!!oh and by the way surgery cant fix a muscle problem thats why we havent heard the "surgery" fix for andrews

He's had his chance as far as I'm concerned. We get to play with 53 blokes this year. Good decision.

Lol, I also think Andrews plays on the other side of the fence

I predict he'll be doing gay porn within two years. He'll still be pulling "muscles" just not his own!

Wow Eagles2099 you must be a die hard fan! LMAO... This team is fine, no check that GREAT!!! The front office is right on in my opinion and down to the practice team we are loaded with talent. FLY EAGLES FLY!!! Oh and at the end of the season we have that big ol' trophy and all our players are sporting mad rings, don't you come crawling back!!

Eagles fans are a different kind of fan. We don’t care if you are the best at your position or just OK at what you do as long as you give your all, play with heart, and play to win. The Birds need a pro-bowl tackle, no question about that but this is not the guy for the job. As much as I shudder when I hear the name Winston Justice I would rather have a guy that cares about his team enough to give it his all than E.D.I.D. Andrews can now sit in his mancave and get his Michael Phelps on for an entire year. Hey Shawn, Phelps is a champion because he has the want, the desire, AND the talent. He practices harder than anyone else in the world to win medal after medal. He doesn’t talk smack and call himself a “beast” and go out there for one lap and call it quits, he works hard and it pays off. Take a lesson in heart ( and singing ).

he is done. he played this team for a bunch of fools...made sure he would not be cut before season started and then walked out with the money...this team is a disaster from the front office to the last man on the roster...pathetic

Andrews is done as an Eagle. Justice will get a chance to prove himself. If Justice is a starter at the end of the season, then he's the starter for next year. If Justice fails, then the Eagles will have to use a 1st round choice to fill a large gaping need. For Andy, it always comes down to line play on both sides of the ball. If Andrews couldn't get right in body (and mind) given the time since his surgery and the fact that the Eagles brought in his brother and Peters, there's no reason to reserve a spot for him next year. At best he's a back-up next year with an opportunity to compete. With a contract that lasts until 2015, the Eagles aren't excited about taking a cap hit. But if the NFL doesn't get a new labor agreement, then there's no cap next year and the Eagles drop Andrews on the first day of the new league year.

Yeah it’s true everyone is sick and tired of hearing about why can’t Shawn Andrews play this year and what makes it worst his brother Stacey Andrews found a way to play and come back from a more serious injury I think. I’ll be the first to say good bye man because we can’t do this for more than 2 years, if he’s not ready for next training camp because right now he’s just stealing money from the organization.

I've read some of your posts for months talking smack about andrews and it's sad. Many of you probably never got past tee ball, much less played to the point where you have a major injury that prevents you from playing the sport you love. You pass judgement on others with no knowledge or respect. Probably calling yourself a good christian as you throw stones at people as they suffer through something you cant and will never understand.

i think its safe to say me and the rest of the eagles nation are completley tired of hereing about shawn andrews, cut him off the roster...trade baskett for a draft pick, that way we can keep brandon gibson...he will be a star, has amazing hands and baskett isnt consistent enough...

I like the whole Runyan idea, probably because I can't get Winston Justice giving up 6 sacks to Osi in that Giants game outta my damn head. Anyways, everyone wonders why we have 7 WRs?? Its money, We can't cut Brown without suffering a big cap penalty. Same reason we kept Corn on the Kolb over Feeley

Sorry to hear this Shawn. Cut the Ties Andy. He is an all-pro but will never be healthy. Plus he never shows up to eagles functions when hes injured. Instead he goes into exile. He apperently is no longer dedicated to football and he needs to go..Sorry but hes a waste of the 53 man roster at this point in the future.

lajkowicz@... 09/15/09 11:27 am ET |
FINALLY!! We stopped wasting his spot.
|
mjacobs45@... 09/15/09 11:27 am ET |
What a surprise....his salary is guaranteed for the year and he goes on the IR. Big Kid? I say we embarrass him and call him the Big Mangina for the rest of his short a** career. He's an embarrassment to the franchise and is stealing money. Sign Runyan, cut his sorry a**, and moved on from the Big Mangina

he's played one game in 2 years. he was examined by a doctor recently and was found to have no structural damage. im confused as to why Reid continues to carry 7 receivers

murphborra@... 09/15/09 11:01 am ET |
Jamie, stop it, Eagles green, he never wore it, and this is does have everything to do with his mindset, mind over matter. He has a history and they should have not stuck with him so long
|
jamie17 09/15/09 10:47 am ET |
People need to stop insulting him. He hurt himself in Eagles green and you have no right to say that he's faking it. He's a casualty of war, he should be a hero for his time on the field, not a villain because of his time off it.
|
jamie17 09/15/09 10:44 am ET |
Why do I have a feeling that Jon Runyan will be back before the end of the year? I have faith in Justice, but after him we're awful thin at the tackle position and I wouldn't be surprised if they signed someone, especially if they can trade one of the 7 WR's they're carrying.
