Demps: Macho Played Like He Had Nothing To Lose

Quintin Demps entered this year's training camp as the starting free safety. He remained in that spot for all four preseason games. However, Demps told reporters following Monday's 10-10-10 practice that it was Macho Harris who took the first-team reps.

"We're all men. We all could tell that I wasn't being consistent enough," Demps said. "There's no sugarcoating it in the NFL. It is what it is.

"We're still competing. It's still a competition. I just have to go in there and compete everyday. Keep it moving."

In addition, Demps also told reporters that Ellis Hobbs will be the primary kickoff returner. Demps handled that role last season.

Demps had the benefit of transitioning into the safety role behind two All-Pros in Quintin Mikell and Brian Dawkins. By the end of the season, Demps was integrated into the defense in three-safety sets to bolster the run defense. Harris, a fifth-round pick out of Virginia Tech, will not have that luxury if he starts this Sunday at Carolina. However, Demps is confident in his teammate.

"I don't think it will be too difficult. He's a competitor. He's got guys around him that are going to help him out a lot, be there for him and guide him through," Demps said.

As a rookie in 2008, Demps had nine tackles and a sack. His biggest impact was as a kickoff returner where he averaged 25.3 yards per return and had one touchdown - a 100-yard score against the Ravens. Demps admitted that by entering training camp and the preseason as the starter changed his mindset and opened the door for Harris.

"He just had that hunger. When you first come in, like I came in last year, you come in with nothing to lose. In my second year, I felt like I had a lot to lose," Demps said. "I was playing not to lose instead of to win. He came in with nothing to lose. That's how you have to be."

Even with the late change, Demps has faith that the secondary will flourish like it did last year. The Eagles were ranked third in the NFL against the pass.

"We're good, on our way to being great," Demps said.

FS... Actually this kinda does suck. I am getting the feeling of inconsistancy in the secondary. Also we are not putting our most talented players out there. The right thing to do is move Quintin Mikell to FS and insert Sean Jones at SS. Then you have two really young talented players behind them in Demps and Harris. In my opinion Sean Jones has outplayed both Demps and Harris. D is looking suspect to me. No true MLB, Ellis Hobbs look like crap in coverage, and FS is still unresolved. We better get this fix fast our Carolina is going to run it down our throat and set us up on play action.

Yes! I totally agree dude! I was thinking just this morning I hope Macho Harris wins the starting job so i can buy his jersey! I had the feeling that he was going to be a great player. I'm also not very big on Demps. Macho showed that he has more talent and hits harder

I don't really see how this is a bad thing. If Macho won the job from Demps there has gotta be something good about him and since Demps lost the job this is a big eye-opener for him. I love Harris...he's a fifth round pick, worked his a** off in camp, and won the job like a freakin' man! My guy Macho Harris! Oh by the way I hope I'm not the only one with a Harris when the season rolls around and hopefully he earns those jeresy sales!

This does not suck! Demps has been an arrogant (and that is very different from simply being confident) a-hole who believed he was entitled to the job. To see this change of attitude in him, where he now understands he is going to have to work for it is a good thing! In the long run, if/when he *earns* the job he'll be a better player for it.

Well this sucks. I like Macho but I'm a huge fan of Demps. Harris has pedestrian speed and isn't big to make up for it. I'm probably the only one in Philadelphia with a Demps jersey, lol. I know the Eagles will be using Demps a lot in multiple-safety sets, and even at corner. Harris can obviously play corner too, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them both on the field a lot. I'm confident that my man Demps will retake the starting FS job again.

the article actually says hobbs is the return man. i'm really excited about harris - he's gonna turn some heads this year. he was a monster at tech. i'm also really impressed by demps right now - that's how a man should talk.

Definitely have to give props to Demps for taking the situation like a man. He knows he didn't play well enough, but complaining to the media would just make the situation worse. Don't worry Quintin, your time will come. Besides, i like you as our kick returner now anyway.
