Eagles Claim DT Dixon; Release QB Feeley

September 6, 2009 | Last Updated: 9/6/09 2:48 PM ET | Comments (29)

The Eagles scoured the waiver wire and have tweaked their roster by claiming defensive tackle Antonio Dixon. To make room for him on the 53-man roster, the Eagles released quarterback A.J. Feeley.

The 6-3, 322-pound Dixon signed with the Washington Redskins as a rookie free agent back on April 28. A Miami product, Dixon had 45 tackles, including 8.5 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks in his four years with the Hurricanes.

Feeley spent a large majority of his career with the Eagles. A fifth-round pick in 2001 out of Oregon, Feeley shouldered the load in 2002 after Donovan McNabb broke his leg and helped the Eagles grab the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. Feeley was traded to the Dolphins in 2004 for a second-round pick. He was eventually traded to the Chargers in 2005 and rejoined the Eagles just before the start of the 2006 season. As an Eagle, Feeley has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 2,177 yards and 16 touchdowns.

At the start of training camp, it appeared as if the Eagles' quarterback situation was set. But when Michael Vick was added on Aug. 13, questions surfaced as to whether the Eagles would keep four quarterbacks. Feeley learned from reporters after Thursday night's preseason finale that Vick will be eligible to play in Week 3 of the regular season. Vick was placed on the Exempt/Commissioner Permission list. Vick can't practice as long as he's on the list, but he can participate in meetings. The Eagles can remove him from this list at any time, but the Eagles would have to make a roster move to make room for Vick.

Another bad decision by the Eagles. Although, sticking with Kolb as a backup will certainly hold on to the inconsistancy the Eagles hold near and dear. Extremely sad to see Feeley go.....

You can't label Kolb a bust based on only one half of football against the Ravens. McNabb threw 2 picks that game and one was to Ed Reed, is McNabb a bust too? My point is that Baltimore is capable of making all-pro QBs (which is what McNabb is when healthy) look like busts. Kolb hasn't even played a full regular season game, if #5 says it's all about rhythm give the man a full game before you throw him under the bus. Why are people so quick to rush to judgment on prospects? The Eagles offense as a whole had some inconsistent stretches last year, look at the Cinci game or either game against Washington. I don't know if Kolb was worth a 2nd round pick or not, but I'm not gonna base my whole opinion on someone's career on one pick to Ed Reed. If people did that half the starters in this league would be labeled busts cuz he's picked them all off.

All the individuals saying that Kolb should have been released just goes to prove how clueless some fans are. Kolb is probably the best pure QB on the team. Forget the Ravens game. You can't throw a guy in without any reps in practice and expect him to do well. Donovan stunk up the place that week as well and he took all the reps in practice. Kolb simply needs a chance to prove what he's got. Vick is the one who should have been released. All of the fans that are excited about him will soon be crying in your beer. That guy is dumb as a rock and can't read a defense to save his life. Pull it down and run is all he knows and he's lost a step or two. Vick has totally screwed this team up and Reid can take all the credit for that.

all i got to say is that with this new offensive line and running game, feeley would have been a great quarter back here

does anybody not remember the Ravens game from last season? Kolb had great accuracy . . . to Ed Reed.

Hey all, AJ was a good QB but I believe that Kolb is better. He looked good in the last game and zipped that throw to Curtis for a TD. He made good decisions. I'm sorry to see AJ go, I followed him all the way from Oregon. The team is in a unique position with the talent they have at QB. The coaches watch Kolb everyday in practice, we don't. They obviously know more than all the naysayers on this blog. My prediction is Vick starts week 7.

I agree with the majority here.. Kolb should have gone. There is no way he is going to be happy playing #3 when Vick is back then we will have a problem with him when his contract expires. AJ is a playing backup and he accepts it and he is a far superior QB than Kolb at this stage. Bad.. Bad.. Bad move FO. Kolb has shown ZERO that he deserves to be a backup, Andy is clearly saving face on a burnt 2nd round pick. AJ will garner immediate interest in the open market and Kolb would not have, that says it all.

Have any of you coaches looked at Feely's stats? He has thrown more intercaptions than touchdowns. He is much older thas Kolb and he couldn't cut it with San Diego and Miami.

Everyone knows good stats aren't needed for a QB to be a winner, however a good record is. 5-1 is all that mattered in '02. 2 years ago the offense couldn't get out of their own way when he almost beat the best team in football. He definitely had a bad week the next week but he moves the offense consistently and was a needed energy when McNabb seemed to have no sense of urgency. Same reason I liked Garcia when he was here, energy and sense of urgency. I don't think we need to worry about McNabb's performance but having an unproven Kolb be handed a #2 and the front office keep saying how he is the future, well I just haven't seen anything leading me to believe our hopes and dreams will be in good hands if/when that happens. THey gave Kolb credit for a great drive against the Jets starters when all he did was receive half the field in 2 interference penalties, one of which was a poorly thrown un-catchable ball. I also don't think Kolb bleeds Eagle green, Feeley certainly did.

What should be noted is that Dmac blamed his inaccuracies on Vick in the jaguars game. I ask, is it vicks fault that almost every game Dmac has to miss an open receiver for a big play in order to get his rythm? If football is a game decided by a play or two than how can a QB not cost his team a game when he throws a pick with no pass rush in his face in the 4th quarter of games with the season on the line or he throws the ball at the feet of the WR when all he has to do is hit him in stride and it is a touchdown? Superbowl winning qbs make the big plays to get the ring at one point or time in their career. If Dmac wants that kind of love from our fans then he can't throw picks with the season on the line that cost the game. Plain and simple he has to win the big one.

Feeley "knows" the system, but I never thought he really ran the offense that well. I'm sure the Eagles tried to trade him, but outside of Philly I don't think that people have a really great opinion of him, otherwise the Eagles would have gotten something for him. His best year Win-Loss wise was 2002- when McNabb went down he went 5-1; but, he had a 75.4 passer rating, 6tds 5ints and averaged a little less than 200 yards passing...it's not like Feeley was carrying the team. It's too early to pass judgment against Kolb either way, he's only had 34 pass attempts in the regular season. Baltimore is an elite defense, and Kolb had engineered a 90 yard drive up until the pick. 2nd and goal from inside the five and they called a pass, I think Andy would like to have that playcall back.

Looking ahead, Birds might be able trade Vick for picks after the season or in midseason due to an injury to QB, RBrown, Baskett, Kcurtis are all to me trade bait. If Birds want to get production out of Maclin they will use him on quick and bubble screens reverses and punt return and try to get him matched on a 4th corner or safety or Lb in 4 and 5 set. He doesnt need a lot of touches to make an impact. When you have a playmaker just get the ball in his hands in space. The key to the short yardage and redzone woes is get the the ball to Shady he scored most of td's at pitt in the redzone. Maclin also scored running the ball in college I hope coaches are smart enough to put the guys in positions that they are comfortable. Adjust to your personel and the young guys will make plays that is what playmakers do on the field.

WORST decision ever. Kevin Kolb pales in comparision to Feeley's abilities and anyone else's for that matter. He is a horrible football player and doesn't seem to be getting any better. We need to get him as far away from our team as possible before he starts costing us important games. Kolb isn't taking us to a Super Bowl, he isn't taking us anywhere. He's horrible... and I hope he breaks a leg or something. I don't understand the desire in having such a horrible player on our team.

Kolb and dmac played poorly against the ravens but dmac had chance to redeem himself. Kolb is a good QB and I would rather have him than vick of course vick is more explosive with his feet but kolb looked good in the preseason. He threw two touchdown passes that were extremely accurate in a tight window in the red zone. In the ravens game Kolb actually played better than dmac but Ed Reed is a great hall of fame type player and he made a great plays on both Dmac and Kolb for interceptions. Feeley threw 4 int against the Seahawks and 3 against the pats the last time he started. He was good enough in 2002 or 2001 to win 5 games and he looked good in the preseason against 2nd & 3rd stringers.

If you look at Feeley's career stats (passer rating 69.6, 27td 29int, 14fumbles, 7 fumbles lost) he is a mediocre QB, and a career backup. Of course, as Eagles fans we remember some of the great games he's had for the franchise and maybe it's unfair to include the Miami years. But the knock against Feeley has always been that he locks on to the primary receiver and doesn't go thru his progressions. Sure if that first guy is open he's gonna hit him, but Feeley was turnover prone because he stared down receivers. We all love Feeley because he almost beat the undefeated Pats in '07, but he threw some costly picks that game (3 total-two to Asante, one returned for a TD and another in the endzone when the Eagles were in FG range and driving for the win). The next week against Seattle he was 19-42 1td 4int (all to LB, Lofa Tatupu(3) and Julian Peterson) QB rating 30.0. Ouch!

Feeley definately proved he could run the show when McNabb broke his leg. The fact that the kept Kolb is not what bothers me though, its the fact that he is the #2. Vick should be the #2 (once he is eligible to play) and here is why I think so. The 3rd QB rule says: If the emergency 3rd QB is put in the game (doesn't have to be at QB) before the 4th quarter, the 1st and 2nd QBs cannot return to the game at any position at any time. The league has to designate players are a Bona Fide QB, so if Westbrook takes a snap from center he doesn't count as QB, but Vick, McNabb and Kolb will most likely be Bona Fide QBs. So hopefully Reid list Vick at #2 when he is eligible to play in week 3.

Horrible decision. The fact that some people feel Kolb is the future of this team is almost as big a concern as the front office granting him a #2 spot with absolutely NOTHING to support such a decision. Doesn't matter what he did in Miami, we're Eagles fans and he won with THIS team from the first time he was asked to do so. Can't say that for Kolb who will turn out to be a bust.

what a great move by the Eagles to release Feeley...Kolb is the future of the franchise...he just needs to get some more reps and he will be up there with some of the greats....Feeley is a proven loser in the league...just look at when he went to Miami and was a flop!....enough said

I feel bad for A.J Feely, and i still feel that Kolb was a waste of a draft pick. I really don't share the confidence the fron office has in Kevin Kolb. I think he is a bust and the Front Office is still trying to save face by keeping him on the roster.
